A Dart In The 9's

Ted Evans and his brother of Ravenna, Michigan used to own a shop in Califonia known as Evans Bros. Racing. There, he built this 68 post car for a fellow in California, who sold it back to him shortly afterwards with only 15 runs on it.
At the time, it was running 10.70's@124MPH on just the motor with leaf springs. Ted though, wasn't quite satisfied....

At the rear of the car, Ted first moved the leaf springs inboard and widened the stock wheelwells. Next, he installed a narrowed 8 3/4 with Moser axles, spool, Richmond 4.10's, and a set of 28 x 11 street tires. A full cage was added with swing-out door bars, along with frame connectors to keep things sturdy. The front suspension is all stock, save for 73 style disk brakes, and the whole package weighs in at 3280lbs.

The 67 440 contains the original steel crank, a set of DC rods, JE 11.5 pistons and a Milodon pan with 1/2" Hemi pickup.
Higher up, Ted's using a Crane 625 mech. roller cam with a Milodon gear drive to operate the Crane 1.5 roller rockers and 2.14/1.88 valves in a set of ported 915 heads. By the way, the port work was done by Bill and Ed's Auto Wrecking in Fontana, Calif....Aside from being an all Mopar junkyard, they also run an A/Fuel dragster!
A Weiand Team G intake rests underneath a 7320 Dominator, which Ted says is untouched except for jetting. The headers are custom made 2 1/8" primaries built by Joe Ellis in Victorville, Calif...Joe used to bend tubes over at Hooker, so he definitely had a good idea of what he was doing.
And last, but certainly not least, is a 400 HP NOS  nitrous system.
A manual 727 handles all of this with Turbo Action parts, including a 2.77 low gear set, reverse valve body and a 9" converter.

As I stated before, the car ran 10.70's on the motor. After adding the nitrous, the car ran a 10.20 @ 135 before bending one of the leaf springs! The shock of the juice being too much for leaf springs, he installed a 4 link, which worked much better. Ted states car runs nice and straight with the bars in there.
His next experiment was a 300HP shot of juice, which took out a head gasket, but got him a timeslip of 9.85!
Ted's currently O-ringing the block, and, just to be safe, installing a Dana 60 at the other end.
He states that he currently crosses the line at 138mph@ 7200rpm  with the 28" tires, so 30" tires are on the list too, along with a cowl induction hood and a chute.
Once these small problems are taken care of, Ted estimates at least a 9.50 pass!
In the picture above, the Dart still had leaf springs, and ran a solid 10.70 @ 124mph ... So we're now into the 10's with leaf springs
...can anyone top this one?

Ted's one of those guys that's always thinking about the future, and believe it or not, he already has plans once he gets the nitrous all worked out.
He's already thinking about turbos to replace the nitrous, which he hopes will eventually get him into the 8's!
An 8 second BigBlockDart...Now THAT'S something worth working for!
