A few upgrades

Gary Nies bought this car in 1980 while it still had leaf springs. He added ladder bars and, with a 440
he screwed together, ran 10.20's until 1988.
At that point, he decided to get a little more serious.

The car was sent to Auto-Fab in Maryland, where a full tube chassis was constructed from mild steel. It features an A-arm front suspension, ladder bar rear, and the engine is set back a full 12 inches. A 'glass nose, doors and trunk helped get the car down to 2650lbs with driver.

Out back, a 4.56 geared Dana 60 spins the 15x33 Goodyears.
The owner built 727 works with a Griner brake
and a Turbo Action 8" 3800 converter.

Interior of course is all business.

Originally, Gary ran a B-1 head 451 which featured 14:1 compression, an .809 lift roller cam, and used a 5800 stall converter. With this combo, the car ran a highly respectable 8.94@152 on the motor. Gary doesnt care for nitrous.

In the 2001 season, a broken lifter caused some mischief and Gary installed this 400 for some bracket racing. It's a stock stroke 383 crank and rods with KB flat tops, resulting in 10.8:1 compression. An MP .557 cam works the 2.14/1.81 valves in a set of ported 915 heads. BG fuel pumps feed the hungry 1050 Dominator, which rests on a Team G intake. MSD fires the mix and, since the engine is set back 12", a custom made set of 2 inch headers handles exhaust.

This new combo has run a best of 10.00@135. Next year, Gary plans on re-installing the old 451 without the B-1 heads.
With either 906's or Edelbrocks, he figures car will be well into the 9's, cheaper and more reliable than the B-1 package.

Gary's brother Ron is a frequent visitor to the site, and will keep us posted on the activity
in the Nies' garage. If you have further questions about the car, feel free to email Ron about them.
