Motorhome 440
« on: November 14, 2006, 09:10:18 PM »

A friend of mine just told me about a 73? motorhome with a good running 440.He said he can get it for $150. He's a Chebby guy so I told him I might be interested in it if he wants to make a quick buck on it.

Is this motor any good? What heads would it have? I was just thinking of it as a spare. Would it be worth $400? If it is worth it I might jump on it and store it in the garage.

sounds good to me, i'm going to use a 75 motor home block.  It might have 452 heads, low compression motor tho.  Some of those motors have odd ball parts lilke weird water pump housings.  But you can swap regular parts for them.  Others might know more details

Mine had different heads with more cooling passages. That one was a '77 and I bought it for $150. It had a windage tray in it.

Mine and some of my spairs are from early 70's motorhomes but, I just used the bottom ends which have forged cranks and rods. They are great for shade tree Nitrous motors (they hold some big horsepower).

Any extra 440 in decent condition is worth pulling these days. I have a 413 I pulled out of a motorhome sitting in my backyard right now; don't know what the hell I'm going to do with it, but hey, it's a big block  Grin. Trying to get rid of the huge, ugly-ass, property-value-reducing turd it came out of was the real problem; took 2 months to get someone to take it away... Tongue

Those 413's are beefy as hell. Remember It's a 440 with smaller holes and most of them were industrial with lot's of exterior webbing....

Tim, my '70 Swinger has a 73 Motorhome engine in it.  If you're building HP put in better pistons (more compression), otherwise, if you're just wanting a torque monster for a cruiser leave it as is and bolt it in.  I went the Hp way, and didn't build it for gas mileage Wink

Jim, that motor looks fantastic. I am still trying to get ahold of my friend. He works odd hours. I was just thinking of keeping it as a spare just in case. It's cheap enough.
