how many proffesional welders out there
« on: November 20, 2006, 07:12:23 PM »

I was just wondering how many people that frequent this site are employed as a welder or fabrication shop worker. I see alot of welding based questions on here and flabergasted on how many fine details and the intricate welding nomenclature some people use. I am a journeyman millwright, cetified pipe welder and just wondered how many fellow tradesmen are here.

I am a Steamfitter first and a welder second. My welding experience is with pressure pipe and structural members for pipe / equipment supports when needed. Don't worry iron workers; if it doesn't have pipe or equipment on it my stinger doesn't touch it.

I have helped out at our trade school with oxy fuel and intermediate SMAW.

I am by no means the man when it comes to welding. That would be jamesdart and bentwheel.  Grin

I would'nt consider myself a "professional welder" as I dont do it for a primary living but I do it every day in my body shop. I gas weld, braze, (brass on brass with brass if I have to) weld cast iron as well as stick, tig, and of course mig. Also have a ProSpot Pr10 Spot welder that I love for hanging panels, it can reproduce a factory spot weld.

funny guy. worked in an antenna shop during highschool and a tank shop for 2 summers. i now am an ironworker with unlimited stick and innershield papers. i have some tig experience on a few different metals, mild steel of coarse, aluminum, copper, brass, hastaloy, and stainless, and can mig.  i really enjoy welding, but i dont think id call myself a pro. there are times i wish id get more time welding, but i know it will just get old. i have seen some guys weld, that would keep me from ever calling myself apro.

I'm a journeyman millwright as well, I love welding, mostly mig anymore for fabrication and small inside structure. I also enjoy welding these mopars. I'm by no means a pro, I've had some classes but mostly time on the job in foundry and industrial maintenance. My first learning experience was rebuilding buckets on bobcats at a local foundry. That was mostly stick welding though.

Roll Eyes Here's my home rig,I also have a 500A Airco for the big stuff it really dose a great job on SS stick.    The Miller welds, stick, mig, tig, and flux-core. I been a certified pipe welder since 1975. In July of 1993 I become a AWS- Certifiied Welding Inspector,I see alot of welding and test welders   And I will say this about welding just not everyone can do it (you have it or you don't) some poeple trys and trys, but some can get it at 16 years old,I see some welder that just has it . Sometimes I have to test 50 or 60 to get 5 or 6 (iam a push over) some bustout before they tack it or set it up,if you arc out of the groove, your out.     Bent43

I can melt metal and most of the time it'll hold together. Alan, on the other hand, can make VERY nice welds with my cheap flux-core unit. He taught me a thing or two.

I went to trade school for welding, went to a commercial dive school and learned underwater welding, worked for years in fab shops, my specialty is Tig, I can mig and stick too...Now however I work a desk job for Verizon, better pay, better benefits and less burns..
