Classics 25 yrs from now...
« on: November 22, 2006, 08:56:31 AM »

I posted this on the charger forums also but would like to hear ya'lls choices too.

I doubt in 1970 that anyone would have guessed a Plymouth Hemi Barracuda convertible would sell for like half a million dollars or more or a Superbird that everyone thought was ugly would be one of the most sought after cars...

What vehicles from today (1985-Now) do you think might have a chance of being the next sought after rare classics or just fun projects 25 years from now?

Here's my list:

PT Cruizer (turbo version fo sho)
03-04 Cobra
New Challenger
Geo Storm   puke
Escalade
I think there will be a small "collector" of SRT4's
Buick Grand National
LS1 F-bodies
GTO's?
I think Durango's will make a comeback in 25 yrs.
anything with a V-tec    LOL

I also think most of today's cars will be in better shape than the classics now..plastic may last longer in the weather (maybe?)..metal tends to rust out in just a few years..so the cars in junkyards will be in way better condition to restore your project in the future.  duster

If this has already been discussed..sorry..but I'm bored and ready for turkey.

it is hard to say what will be the next collectable, but what will not be hard to guess is all the 25 year old cars are going to have gremkins causing havoc  with the electrical systems so you will see many in the junk yards.

I'm going to call about a 82 Imperial that states good body, no rust, doesn't run. Yes, it is in a junk yard.

I bought an 81 earlier this year for $100 because the guy bought it and it didn't run,  rust free, original paint, no dents, he took the running gear out so he could use the K member for a street rod.

I know they had a problem with the fuel injection on these when they were new, so 25 years later many sit if they were not converted by the factory to have a carb. instead of fuel injection. My 81 was converted in 88 and the car now has 14,200 miles, looks like new. It has always been in garage, driven in the rain 4 times and never in the snow. But I know the electrical system will be the downfall of the car. I have not opened the moon roof in years. it was going real slow the last time I tried and the cover for the glass didn't want to slide back so I decided to leave well  enough alone.

I went to start it many years ago and the battery was low. I ended up jump starting it. The odometer went from showing 3,800 miles to 53,000 miles (went back to 0 miles when converted) I called everywhere tying to find someone that might know what to do. No help, so when I drove it the next time and it went to add another mile it went back to the correct mileage.

The 81~83 Imperial had the 1st digital dash, computer controled fuel injection and many other 1st, Over priced and didn't sell well. Only a few over 11,000 built in 3 model years. I hoping it is the next `71 Hemi `Cuda Convertible..........hehehehe

I'm hoping my Prowler makes it as a collectable.

I think there will be many cars that are the modern collectable, but it will be what the KIDS of today want................................that will be a said day when a honda civic is concidered a collectable.

I do think the 4 door will be more popular since most kids are growing up with them and the 2 door is being left behind by the manufacturer.

Mustangs, Shelby's, Ford GT's

I had a guy yesterday tell me the 93 dodge caravan I was driving was nice, (white with sunvisor, air foil, gold wheels, pinstripe and running boards) who knows, since it replaced the station wagon and now they are cool maybe the minivan will be in the future.

No matter what if you have it drive it. A car in the garage to say you have it isn't as much fun as driving it.

the last car to run off of gasoline will be a collectors item.also, some of the alternative fuel vehicles that have limited production runs will be of value.but it's my dart that will running without restraints or govermental control.the new cars will have black boxes that can be reviewed at any time by almost anyone Sad.i believe muscle cars will always be coveted because the new cars will be for transportation only and not for fun.i can foresee clubs at old racetracks where wealthy collectors can buy gasoline and drive their antiques around the track.

I hate to say it, but the young kids now will be able to buy their first cars back again in 25 years.  This means there will probably be a year one catalog offered in the future for the following:
Mitsubishi Eclipse
Honda Civics
Dodge Neons
Ford Focus
etc...
Think about it, Most of the collector stuff today is what we either lusted for as a young kid, (M code 1969.5 Superbee being mine),or the first car I owned (1981 Pontiac Grand Prix being mine) and I woudln't mind having a mint one of those back also.
So, if the kids of today drive on, it will be Itikitojo cars.

as far as four doors i agree for this reason.they have they same body lines and engines of the cool muscle car two doors of yester-year that are long gone or way to expensive to obtain.i see this in our future rather than distant  future.the 4 door will come back as todays horsepower can carry them and there are alot of candidates waiting for restoration.i think what types of fuel and it's  availability will dictate what gets built in the future.

My white 1992 Camaro RS Convertible with tan top and matching leather seats...

It was the last year Camaros were made in the USA. Mine was built in the now defunct Van Nuys, California plant.

Also, it came with white 5-spoke monochromatic "mag" wheels.

How about the trucks. We are seeing a steady rise in the 78-79 Lil Red Express trucks. I think my 2000 Dakota R/T might be a collectable as well as the Hemi and SRT10 Rams. Ford Lightning and the Harley Davidson edition F100s. I really want an HD F100 myself. Also the Chevy SS 454 1500 PU along with the Cyclone and Typhoon turbo 4s.

This is just my 2 cents.

It's really hard to predict. Twenty-five years ago it looked like early Mustangs were going to be the most valuable of the "common" cars from the 60s. Virtually everything else has passed them now, including some other Fords.

Agree 100%, you lust what you couldn't have as a kid.  So whatever you saw running around or in the mags between 5 years old till say 25 and couldn't afford it, will be your dream car.

Problem with new cars is the production numbers (lots) and the lack of change over the run.  The new charger will look the same for it's run of 6 to 10 years.  It's a lot like baseball cards, once everyone started collecting them, the market died.  No one is tossing them out or using them to turn their bike into a chopper (cards in spokes).

I don't know the imports so my picks.

buick turbo gn's and '94 ss impala
first vipers (roadster and ht)

Have to add the shelby omni, I want one.

I see the point about the large number of production vehicles. Keep this in mind though, If someone thinks it is special, Like possibly an srt-8 charger, there will be more of them kept nice, PERCENTAGE wise, than the stockers. This means that finding a "virgin" survivor will maybe be harder to find in survivor condition than the high demand one now. Case and point, One of my all time favorite cars is a 1977-1981 Trans-Am . I love the "Bandit Edition." So did everyone else, that is why it was probably the highest production color built. (Black and Gold, not nesecarilly just the Bandit car).  In 1979 and 1980, they made the silver anniversary edition and the white pace car edition. Most people kept those car mint because they were considered "special". If you look at those nowadays, The kids of the 80's pounded the crap out of the bandit cars and the "specialty" Trans Ams are still plentiful.  If you price them, you can still get a nice unmolested "specialty" Trans-Am for $15000-$20000. Not to bad, BUT.... Find a MINT Y84 S.E. Bandit car, and you could be looking $20000 and up. Don't get me wrong, there are alot or good resto project cars out there for $3000-up, but cherry survivors on the higher production Bandit bring much better money than the Anniversary or Pace cars. Just my thought.......By the way , How many mint bodied, 2 door  c-bodied mopars do you figure were junked by Demo Derbies and the like.  They were high production, but now are becoming valuable because of their scarcity. You're correct. 4.3s to be excact. I was thinking of the Chrysler 2.2 turbos like the Shelby Z's and such. My mistake.

My brand new 1977 Camaro Z-28 used to love the same vintage Firebirds also, as it would eat them up on a regular basis! Grin taunt Grin  There were two reasons that I sold that car, the birth of my son in 1985 and the fact that a Dodge "Lil Red Truck" with it's AWESOME 360, used to make that Camaro look bad on a regular basis at the drag strip! That was the END for me and non Mopar muscle cars!  Grin

I have doubts that any of the cars today will be on the road in 25 years, as they will all be alternative fuel based vehicles and gasoline powered cars and trucks will be in museums for your grand kids to look at and wonder about. I'm SICK of supporting the Middle East by buying their crude oil!  puke explode I think that the vast majority of people will force car makers to come up with a different type of car and power plant, so it will be VERY interesting to see what happens.

agree You can pick up a 400 hp 2003 - '04 Ford Cobra today for 27K. With a pulley, programmer, K and N, Bosanti exhaust you can pick up another 70 hp. Pretty good bang for the buck. I'm not a Ford guy, but I see why the kids call these things Terminators.

My buddy and I built an RX-7 after no one would run our Mopars any more. It was an 80 or 81. I've noticed you never see them on the road any more. Even more so, the later ones that look like Porsches, you never , ever see those any more. Who's got them all??
