My DD BMW 325E needed a water pump BAD. I had to order the parts to get them aftermarket, the other option being pay an exorbitant amount at the dealership. Since I knew they were coming in today, I haven't been topping up the coolant for the last few days (big mistake).
Long story short, it was starting to seize from the heat. If I would stop at a light, when it dropped to idle it would stall, and crank over very, very slow when I started it up again. Not to mention lots of smoke from under the car.
I brought it to work, topped up the oil, changed the water pump (and timing belt while I was in there) and the alternator, just seemed like a good time to do it because it needed it......and it runs fine. The thing was getting so tight with heat that it couldn't stay running.
Maybe I'm speaking too soon--I'm going to pull the oil pan off on Monday to see if there's anything in there.

Ran my 318 out of coolant on my first Ram when a freeze plug blew, drove it about 3 miles home with no coolant in it what so ever. Put in a new plug and refilled the coolant, never had a problem with it.

A couple of years ago, I had an asshole (oops, I mean "mechanic") at one of the shops I delivered to change the freeze plugs on a slant six Dart I had. He told me he would hook me up and do it for free since I didn't have the time, but he ended up not doing it at all, and then 2 days later he called me and told me my car needed to go because it was taking up space, and that he would be charging me for storage. I told him to screw himself and to have my car at my work before the end of the day. So he shows up and throws my keys at me, and leaves; I go out to check it, and it has ABSOLUTELY NO coolant or oil in the engine! He drove it 2 miles from his shop like that; I was PISSED. There was nothing I could do since I had no record or written proof my car had been at his shop; so I just replaced the freeze plug in the parking lot, filled up the fluids, crossed my fingers, and started it. Ran like a champ. You gotta love slant sixes...
