Flat towing with Auto trans?
« on: November 25, 2006, 08:32:30 AM »

I need to tow dolly the 84  5th ave up to school.  it will have the rear wheels down.  I HAD to do a 15 mile tow with the back wheels on the dolly.  THAT was very interesting when it started to sway side to side!!!   lol      Anyway....what's my risk to the trans for a 20 mile trip?    I know....pull the driveshaft...but I'd like to take the lazy way out if possible.   what do you think?

If it is rear wheel drive. Start it up, put in neautral and leave it idle, OR pull the driveshaft!!   If not , you can always work on the trans later, if it acts up!!!!!!!!

Well it's not that long of a trip.  As I'm sure you know the problem is it will turn all the internal parts of the tranny and the pump won't be running.  You could start up the car being towed and put it in N so at least the front pump is running.  Not sure how safe that is though.    I don't know if a 20 mile trip is enough to hurt the tranny... I'm not a tranny expert.

Go for it.... A 20 mile trip wont hurt it... You can always leave it in park. May need some new rear tires.  LOL LOL LOL

Always thought (and read) that 25 miles was the limit and keep it under 50mph.

Back in the day, before FWD cars, motorhome guys would just leave the towed car idling in neutral like Dartsport stated.   Then the range is unlimited or till the gas runs out.

Why didn't I think of this before?   \/][...Get some of those wheel dollies they use in garages to move your car around on...get four of them, put all four wheels in them, and tow all you want, nothing gets ruined....It's only 20 miles.... drinks

The deed is done...    I disconnected the driveshaft at the pinion yoke.  luckily, the muffler was right along side of the driveshaft...so I just tie the driveshaft to the muffler.  It worked out well.  Now we have the 5th at the school shop......ready for surgery.  Wink     I feel bad...but I guess we'll just cut it to pieces......    (Pinke:  I didn't forget the emblems....)

PinkE....you've given me a hell of an idea to steal.  One of those faux crystal hood ornaments wil look great on top of a future project.
The pic was from a mock-up session to see if it would work.  "Kit car" '23 T-bucket that will be Mopar powered, and sort-of converted to Dodge.

Thanks.....Roger

I've always wanted to see a /6 hanging out the headers and intake. That  car should have some visual impact.
