if it was easy, everyone would build a ive been waiting 20 years to build my cars. im greatful to finally be in a position to do it He hit the nail on the head! Hang in there! I know. I have been living this for about four years now. I raced the year before last and then this year took it apart and started over. I work on it and then don't for awhile. Those shows like overhaulin can get you down becuase they do so much in a week. Reality isn't that way. You'll get it!

I know how you feel. My Barracuda car sat in the garage for 10 years and then finally the time came where I had the two most imortant things I had been missing before, time and money at the same time. My plan was to freshen up the motor and quick paint job and I'd be back on the street in a few months. Now 1 1/2 years later and a lot of money I'm still not done (paint scheduled next Friday though). It'll be worth it in the end, take a deep breath and hang in there.

My son and I rolled 'er out of the garage this afternoon and wet sanded the body with 800grit. Put the hood back on. Tomorrow I have to go over the body with a piece of chalk and circle all the little chips and scratches that need filling...

Its kinda funny. I hadnt layed a hand on my car in couple years, but just the other day, I mounted the leaf springs. I'm using the short kit. With the offset shackles and a trick I learned from Brent and Tom, I fit 275/60's in my car. Thats enough tire for my 12 second daily driver goal. My 2 cents.

I believe that this is the secret..Rather than being daunted in your mind by the HUGE task of completing the entire car, string together a bunch of little jobs.. Get the satisfaction of completing a little job, then go on to the next one.. Remember what Mao Tse Tung said : " A journey of 1000 Miles begins with one single step"

We've all had the kind of days you started this post about. Those are the days you take a suprisingly refreshing nap under the car after trying to get motivated to start something. Eventually you figure out you can't sleep your life away under the car and actually start to get some work done. Glad to hear you're getting back to business. Love those hoods, too. I agree the SSP's are a step up. Having had both, I'd take the SSP back in a heartbeat over the RR. An interesting bit of trivia on these cars...functioning rear quarter windows were NOT standard. They came fixed unless the car came with the AC option. Wierd, huh? (I've never heard of that on any other car.) Pic is of my '73 I sold a few years back. ![\/][](http://www.bigblockdart.com/Smileys/classic/finger020.gif) [attachment deleted by admin]

Hmmmm....I didn't know that. Mine are not only functional, but powered at that... Rolled it out again today and wet sanded the roof, cleaned it off and went around with a piece of chalk and circled all the little imperfections I need to fix. Now I have something to do tomorrow...little bit of glazing putty and 400 grit and she'll be ready for primer. What do ya'll recommend for an inexpensive primer that will fill in small (like sanding) scratches? Rattle can it? Buy a cheap HVLP and shoot it? What do ya'll think? I was talking with a buddy (Rick, 71autoxr) tonight and he does not recommend epoxy primer because it is so hard to work with after it has been sprayed...his Challenger is sprayed with the stuff. I have to agree...anything with "epoxy' in it's name is tough as nails. I'm just looking for a good, inexpensive, filler primer. THANKS!! Mike BTW -- Richard -- I would love a yellow car, but not this one. The engine bay and trunk have already been sprayed with FE5, so instead of re-doing them, I'm going to stick with it. Maybe the Barracuda... santa4

Funny you ask... The guy who did Richard's son's Dart did a phenominal job, but I have not met him (the painter). I have a Maaco that just opened less than five mins from my house and I've met and talked with their one painter...not much business yet. She (yes, she...) sounded like she really had a passion for painting and we talked for a while. She had piercings, tats, the whole nine yards...for a grand I may just go to Maaco myself. I was quoted a grand for a single stage urethane and $1200 for the single stage and clear over it. That was for the Barracuda, but the price would be the same for the Satellite too. I'm saving my pennies and doing as much prep by myself so all they have to do is spray, cut, and polish.

I think the back yard painter that does it on the side is no longer with us. Been wondering if it's possible to build a booth with enuff filtration to keep the neighborhood safe. And keep the smell down, so they don't think you have a meth lab.
You get to a point were you have a couple cars to paint, and it's worth thinking about doing it yourself.

Hey Mike and Ed, I have two different body shops that I've done business with the past few years and both do very nice work, but I KNOW that neither one of them will do a complete car for what Maaco will do it for. I will list them both for you guys so you can check them out. The first shop did most of the work on my sons Dart. They did the small rust repair around the bottom of the rear window and then did the paint matching and blending work, repainted the hood top and bottom, repaired a "wing nut" dent in the center of the hood from the previou owner, repainted the entire engine compartment and front suspension and also subcontracted with his contacts to do the soda blasting of the engine compartment and front suspension, replaced the vinyl roof, and replaced the front windshield. Red McConnell is the owner and he knows me well, so if you want to let him know that I referred you, that's fine with me, as Red is an old schooler like me and has owned some VERY nice muscle cars, both Mopar and others, but my point is, he KNOWS how to repair and paint our older cars. He will NOT do "cheapo" work, as he just doesn't believe in doing ANYTHING the fast and easy way. He does VERY nice work, but he will NOT be your cheapest option. His shop is just east of the I-17 freeway and just north of Deer Valley Road on 24Th Avenue. If you want directions, let me know. Red's Collision Service Red McConnell is the owner 22039 North 24th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85027 Phone: 623-869-0813 Fax:623-780-9888 The second shop did a repair and repaint of the passenger side front fender, after another client at the mechanical shop where we were doing all of the restoration work on the Dart, did the ultimate STUPID thing when they knocked over a heavy duty steel commerical grade transmission jack and when it fell, it bouced off of the Darts passenger fender on the way down! . The mechanical shop sent the car to this body shop at their expense, to have the dent in the top edge of the body line on the top of the fender fixed, along with repainting the entire fender. I had also known the owner of this shop, from 20 years ago when I used to work at the bank where he had his accounts, so as you can see, this shop has been in the same location for MANY years. He's an older gentleman, but as Mike can tell you after seeing the car, he did an AWESOME job of matching and blending the paint and you can NOT tell that there was ANY damage done to the fender. He may not remember me by name, but I'm pretty sure that he will remember the BRIGHT YELLOW Dart!!! santa4 This shop also replaced the drivers door upper and lower door hinges and fixed a small dent on the drivers side quarter panel and also repainted the drivers side quarter panel. Once again, his paint matching and blending was superb as was his body work. Once again though, he MIGHT be a little bit cheaper than Red's, but I'm positive that he will NOT be as low as Maaco. As far as doing all of your own prep work, I am positive that BOTH of these shops will spend time checking out what you have done, as it will be their reputation and name on the line when the project is finished, so they both will want the best possible work that they can do for you. This second shop is located off of Cave Creek road, just south of the 101 freeway. Heres a couple more "before" and "after" pictures of the Dart's engine compartment painted by Red's Collision Service and the "after" shot of the repaied front fender where the large tranny jack stand did it's damage. This was repaired by The Carriage Shoppe.

Seemed like a real nice guy, but all business. I had no idea you guys knew eachother. I also talked with a few guys from Roes Custom Paint and two guys from the Muscle Car Garage in Chandler. Do you have any experience with them? I think I'll stay away from the Muscle Car Garage just because they seem to be a bunch of Chevy guys

Hi Josh, I've never dealt with the shops that you mentioned. Back in 1991 when the Coronet was painted, I had a paint and body guy living next door, so I did alot of the prep work and he sprayed the car. Other than the Dart and the Coronet, I had not had to have anything painted since 1989 when a buddy and I sprayed the engine compartment and trunk and interior on my 70 Charger R/T. Red is all business until he gets to know you, as he has alot of repeat customers, so he doesn't have time to just "shoot the bull", as it's just him, his son Jason and Rick, who does alot of the paint work. Richard
