some new-found knowledge...

Satellite internet is the single biggest crock of bull on the planet. I could carry hand-written messages around faster than this....

It might be where you are. I know somebody here (E-body Parts and Restoration - AKA www.themoparshop.com) who has it and doesn't seem to have a complaint about it.

I just got a DSL and phone package from Talkamerica.  $65 a month includes 24/7 local and long distance US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.  The DSL speed seems pretty quick too.

I can't get DSL or cable out here, so I tried this.  The install guy told me to get the pro pan if I was used to DSL.  A straight download like a movie is close to DSL during off-peak hours, but regular pages like this forum take forever because of the lag time - every image takes 8-12 seconds - there are 98 images on this page.... I'd say overall, satellite is 50% slower than dial-up during normal surfing. Just a total joke.

I have dial up and have been itching to get high speed. I'm 1 km away from the box and it's not getting any closer anytime soon.I almost got the satellite but someone warned me that it wasn't really that fast and like you said pricey!

Well, since cable isn't here either, I got Direct TV which has packages that include a satellite internet rider on the plan. They waved ALL hardware and setup fees, so it was really cheap. I figured I got a super bargain considering the advertised speeds, but now of course I realize I got scammed.

There's a phone box just under a mile from here, which will have DSL sometime next year - they told me if I'm less than 18,000 feet round trip from that box, I'll be able to get it then - So I have to put up with this until that happens.

hang in there.  i went thru the same thing with coverage area and hounded it for about two years then actually getting it onto the property was another chore.  but they were pretty decent about the whole thing and have since spread onto the other side of my property and several of the rural neighbors have jumped on board with complete packages.  getting all that done made it a little easier to start going out to the property and spending some good weekends out there getting things cleaned up and cleared for the garage and the house in the next couple of years

i had satellite internet a few years ago.....it was far better than dial up and got me by till cable was available (dsl was unavailable also). 70 dollars a month was outragous, but i needed the reliability.  i still have the dish and modems, if anyone is interested.

I have cable.I went over my mom's house and got on the p.c to show her something(she has dial up)and i about went insane. They are in the same position as Bill .They said they would have to pay to get the cable ran from the road all the way down the middle of the driveway(200 ft.+).Can you imagine how much it would cost to get the driveway dug up and cable installed. hammer crazy they are.

most cable companies will run there cable on to your property its jjust a matter of getting someone out there to do it.  the ditch witched it all the way to my power pole from the street on to my property which was almost a thousand feet from there closest box.

We went from DSL to Cable MAX, then to dial up....what a big change....everything is so slow on dial up.  We've looked into sat linkup cause we also have dish, but dish doesnt offer sat uplink here in our area.  We've waited for 8 months for wireless "land" survey.......no show yet....told them if your on comming customer service for a sight survey is this bad, then your customer service once your on board must really be bad.

Were still on slow dail-up here rurally.

I've had comsast cable at home for quite a while. DSL at work. Cable is very fast, and $40/mo is not too bad, but dont waste your money on the programming.  Satelite is the best for TV, by a mile.

We had Road Runner out here in a few local areas when the cable wars started but I think Cox squashed them and all others.   I get all my electronic stuff including phone fed in by one co-ax.

That's how I'm doing it. Not bad, except I don't watch TV that much. Before that, I was "grabbing" wireless with a home-built shotgun yagi antenna; high-speed for free! If any of you dial-up guys are in a residential area, you might want to try it; chances are someone in your area is running wireless and you can share their signal. It's perfectly legal as long as you aren't using crazy unapproved FCC devices, and you aren't trying to hack into people's unprotected routers (a lot of them are left wide open; not smart).  Wink

You guys think it's bad there, try a third world country.  I pay $84 a month for 1024 but it's down all the time or the speed drops to 1M constantly.  They don't garauntee the speed and they are the only provider here.  Their excuse is, "We know we are having problems but we are looking at upgrading our service."  I even lost service while typing this short message.  I'd drop back to regular dial up, but I'm trying to set myself up so I can do video calls back to the states and I hear the lag is horrible if you don't have enough speed.

Oh well, only 14 more months to go.
