Keep original or restore ? 68 Hemi Roadrunner
« on: December 16, 2006, 07:14:48 PM »

A member of our club has this 68 Hemi Roadrunner. It is an original but has had a hard life.needs left quarter(crunched and straightened). All body panels have deep scratches.needs rust repair. Engine bay original but(washer jug unuseable, numerous leaks, more rust then paint).

Owner states it can only be original once, true but what a nice restored classic it would be. Whats your opinion ? Its going to take a couple of posts to get pics loaded.enjoy ! santa4

if it was a nice original then leave it....but if it's starting to hurt the car is worth more restored....at least with it a little beat up he can drive it and enjoy it more...

Restore it. This is a fine example of what Road Runner was about. A pillar coupe non decor package with rubber floor mat and inland shifter. Can you say Most bang for the buck in '68? The car never got the factory tach; it is left blank to the right of the temp gauge.

Neat car !  If it`s an original paint car and you`re sure it`s never been touched up , then it`s a tough question. If it`s been in an acident or has old bodywork definitely do a resto. Either way it`s a very cool car.

Haha original? NO WAY....Man if its got as much rust as you say and has all those other problems it needs a restore,a rusty hemi car is just that.Personally i would fix the leaks and pound the hell outta it for a year or 5 while collecting the needed parts for a REASONABLE cruiser.Whatever, its a great find though do it justice man! 4 speed

 agree

Drive it like you stole it, that's what they were built for. If your buddy restores it too much, it'll see more trailers than roads

I have six cars and little money. All of my cars need to be restored. They are all in the process of restoration at one stage or another. I hate it. I like the idea of restoring, but if money is an issue, I say restore as you drive. Do a quarter panel, then drive it as you build up the funds for the engine compartment. When all metal work is just about complete, freshen the engine and have it painted. This way you can enjoy your ride, stay out of the poor house and in a year or so, have a fully restore beauty of a ride. The alternative is to have yor car laid up for that entire time and you will wish you could have driven it. Finally, if money is no object, then just jump in and restore it, since it has already been hit and fixed once anyway. Rust is no good!!! Happy Holidays!
