You wonder how you functioned without it. I was on dialup for years (read: too cheap to pay for hi speed) and just dealt with the (lack of) speed. Every school vacation and over the summer, the kids would blow the limit and it would end up costing me more than the DSL. I bit the bullet and got DSL last summer. Equipment? Most of the companies will give you a bottom of the line modem for free on signup. Plug the phone line into the modem, modem into the computer and you are ready to go. Some services require software to be installed, but my Linus box at home recognized the DSL modem right away. I am paying $22/mo for 700k (ish) service compared to $10/mo for dialup - no contest!

welcome to the fast lane man.. I had the same experience 3 yrs ago. I was on aol and msn dial up for like 3 yrs and then went to dsl and i was in disbelief.. Firs thing i did was to to fasttrack performance and download a 10 meg vid just to see how long it would take. i never even watched the video. youll never be able to go back now.

With my AT&T local phone service included, my high speed connection is less than $20 a month. Unfortunately, I don't use a home phone, but am required to have the service for my internet connection. I just keep the ringer off and stuff the thing behind my couch. I was going to get wireless internet ( Verizon ) added with my cell phone bill, but I balked at their $70 a month.
