Engine Paint
« on: January 12, 2007, 12:46:26 AM »

I've just finished tearing my engine down, and I'm going to repaint the block and heads. What engine paints are people using? Anything good out of a can? And what about prep?

One prep method I like doing is hitting it with a propane torch prior to painting. You can watch the pores of the cast iron "dry out" as you work the flame removing any residual cleaners or moisture.

Good call Tom!  I've seen that happen before but it never occurred to me to use it as a paint prep.

Tom's idea works great. I always used to do that when I painted headers with VHT. Nobody could ever figure out why my headers stayed painted.

I've mentioned in a similar thread that Plastikote is great engine paint from a spray can. The Hemi Orange covers good and cleans up nice.

I was actually thinking about using Por 15 for painting my engine compartment. It seems that there are three parts to the basic kit, and then I can topcoat it ( degreaser, primer and paint, + whatever topcoat, right? ). I'm assuming that the engine paints are a little different. Oh, and the torch heating sounds like a good idea, especially for the headers. Thanks guys, any further input would be geat as well.

the flash and poor lighting makes the picture look light blue, but i matched the turquoise pretty close. i had the paint store somewhat match  it to an original part, but they made it too blue. they gave me some yellow tint i added till i was happy.

I've used the POR 15 engine paint on a couple of engines and it seems to work great. Good coverage and stays in good shape a long time.

i had a small crack on a bolthole to heat and weld.....the immediate area obviously burned away, but the close surrounding paint held up awesome. ill be able to spot right back into it.

i have to agree with eldubb..  the epoxy primer and u-tech 3.8 is great stuff.  i used brake-kleen to clean up my motor and djv sprayed it for me....
i'll tell you that paint really holds up..  i have spilled all kinds of gas on it doing jet changes and it hasn't touched it.  oil hasn't done anything to it, when i clean it up it looks as good as the day it was sprayed...

from this mess..

to this..

to primer

to paint..

aaahh. much better..

the epoxy really bites into the cast, i have awesome adhesion. check out how the paint edge feathered with no problems at all. no chipping or peeling....... i masked along the a few edges and casting seams, hit the existing paint with a scotch-brite,  spotted it in and im ready to rock and roll!  drinks
