I looked at the engine harnesses from Layson's, but they are all designed for a later A. I don't care about originality, looks, etc. Would one of these plug into my fuse panel? There's not much wiring, but I want to clean up the engine compartment, and don't really want to make one from scratch.

hey bud, i am in the process of building a street strip duster with a bb stroker, and i am going to use a painless 12 circuit universal wiring harness for everything. it is brand new, for under 300 bucks, no need to read resistances, seperate colors, no hassle. I figure i don't want a fire or pain in the butt shorts and such. I would use that, the kit comes with a new fuse panel as well.

Where are you getting your harness from? I was thinking the same thing. Does the harness include all the connectors?

A-bodies since 1978, this one since 1983

The wiring harnesses changed every year. For a non-original type car I would consider a generic wiring kit (like Painless).

I talked to Evans wiring (recommended on ABodyJoe's site). The guy told me that if I send in what is left of my original harness, that he can make me one that works. For some reason, he didn't have a template for 1964, only '63 and '65. Just my luck! http://evanswiring.tripod.com/id3.html

I used a universal harness, modified the bulkhead connector with a plate on each side and a hole with a large grommet to run the wires through. I located the new blade style fuse block under the hood for easy access (I don't fit under the dash with the bars running past the doors).

Bill Evans should be making up my harness right now. I'm planning on keeping the car fairly original as its unmolested ( except for the harness ) and in decent shape. Plus, the car already came from the factory with a small-block and four-speed, which is why I bought the car in the first place.
