Topic: Instrument cluster not working (Read 278 times)

Any advise from anyone on what to troubleshoot first to get my gas guage back to working on my 69 dart, right now nothing is working on the cluster expect speedo, no lights are working.
1. How do I confirm power is going to the cluster. 2. How do I confirm if fuel sending unit is bad. 3. If voltage limiter is NG will it cause cluster lights not to function also?
Thanks for everyone's input. 5258

You very likely have broken pins on the circuit board. You can measure voltage on the wire to the sending unit. The IVR has nothing to do with the lights.

break out the test light and see from where, to where it has power

Checked the voltage at the sending unit tonight, not getting anything, looking at the backside of my cluster it looks as if on 2 female plugs are going in is that how the cluster is supplied with power?

Yes, you really need a wiring diagram to follow it, but you may very well have a bad IVR, too. BUT, with multiple problems I still suspect broken or loose pins.

Don't jump into buying one.....someone here, a few months ago, gave out a link to a site that you could go to and print a diagram. OK guys.....help me out....someone must have bookmarked it. Jim

When you say nothing is working, do you mean the ammeter, also? If so, it's on a separate circuit board along with all the lighting on the right side of the cluster. It sounds like you might have power feed problems...

Nothing is working on the cluster expect for speedo. All connections are in. at this point I'm tracing wires back as everyone has suggested.

I had a simular problem. The Haynes manuel at Autozone has a pretty decent wiring diagram. Everything led to the headlight switch (B2). Test light showed no power there. When I followed the wire it went to the fuse box. Hummm....power on both sides of the fuse and no power to the wire leading to the head light switch. Took the fuse box loose and checked the back of the fuse terminals. Power on one side and no power on the other. The clip in the fuse box was pretty loose so I took the fuses out. Used a little scotchbrite on the terminals. Took the loose clip/terminal out and squeezed it together a little. Put it back in the box and reinstalled the fuses. That fixed the problem. Fuses and terminals must have gotten a little corroded sitting around in a field before it was given to me.

Ok, did some work on it tonight. Still not working but I am getting power to the cluster, Beginning to think its a grounding issue, I have noticed the emergency flasher are working, but not the turn signals.

Here's the latest.
Getting 11-12 volts going to the voltage regulator but when checking the fuel guage It's jumping anywhere from 5-9-2-0-5 which makes no since. I have tried changing the volatge regulator (had a spare off 70 dart). What's the odds both can be bad. Also it looks as if the turning signal is not working on that side of the cluster.
A couple of maybe crazy questions. If the turn signal flasher is bad could this be the culprit If the ground back at the tank is NG, could this cause the problem. I think unlikely due to getting the same reading on the temp guage also. Could the volateg regulator be bad?
Thanks The wiring diagram helped alot.

a voltage regulator controls output of the alternator, you should get in the 12 volt rage anywhere, except for the fuel and temp gauge which have a voltage limited hooked to them to take them down to 5 or 6 volts,

Got it working last night, by replacing IVR, cleaning connection points at cluster and at tank. Also both turning signals are working by repalcing flasher fuse and fixing loose wiring at the fuse box.
Thanks to all for there help.
