"Bought a 'Fun Car'!" (Give me a break)
« on: January 18, 2007, 12:01:59 PM »

Oh man, I feel sorry for two people very close to me. Both of them bought cars for 'Fun'.

Example One: My buddy bought an Audi TT Quattro for $25,000, he has had it for six months (and a ton of value-sucking miles) and suddenly now, he has no respect for the car and he is bored with it.

Example Two: My other friend just bought a 350Z for $23,000 and after only a couple of months "the cars not fast enough, and it's a two seater, and I scraped a rim on the curb, and..." it pretty much goes on and on.

Now, I am piecing together a muscle car and having a blast doing it for (hopefully) under $20,000 and I will never get rid of it. It will increase in value and my kid will be drooling to drive it one day.

I love the idea of building my own 'Fun Car'.

The cuda never fails to bring a smile to my face, even if I am only starting it up in the garage. Grin

I've known people who did the same thing. There's nothing inherently wrong with choosing those cars, but to spend that kind of money and be bored with it in a few months shows that they did not know themselves very well. Might as well burn money (or give it to me).

I talked to my cousin the other day. He's got the money to buy what he wants and said, "I want a 69 Firebird convertible". I told him we could find one. He thought for a moment and said, "You know, it really doesn't fit into my lifestyle. I'd like to have one, but now's not the right time". He knows himself so he's not going to spend the money where he won't enjoy it. He did buy a dude ranch last year because he loves horses and wants a place to vacation to.........

I used to valet park, and both those cars really suck, but each to their own, right? I bought one newer car that handled well, had adquate power, etc., but it just wasn't the same. When you build something yourself, and you don't see 10,000 other ones every day, it's much more gratifying. I know its egotistical, but I love when a guy driving some silver blob runs over at the gas station and asks if my car's for sale. Yeah, a rusted old car in my garage half dissasembled is much more exciting than generic car B farting around town.

If you got time to turn, you're going too slow.

Me and my dad were just talking about this a few nights ago, actually. We know "drag racers" who buy, race, and sell cars more often then they change their underwear, each new car is just a shiny new toy for them to be bored with and eventually toss to the side because it isn't ever good enough.

But when you build your own car, of course it's going to be good enough, because it's EXACTLY what you wanted, from the color of the car down to the valve cover bolts, every inch of that car is something that you poured blood, sweat, and tears into, which makes you take a lot more pride in it then something you just bought.

Well I have to agree you should be happy with a car if you build it.

This isn't always true, there are many guy's that get the enjoyment of buildiing the car, once it's done they sell it and build another one. A perfect example is member B1Valiant.  Something to think about
