torsion bar touch-up
« on: January 26, 2006, 04:58:23 AM »

I have a set of HD t-bars that I bought off of E-bay a while back, and they have been in storage for a while. They are in great condition (i.e. no dings, deep scratches or bent), but they look kind of nasty on the surface. I am probably going to powdercoat them, but how should they be prepped? Is sanding o.k.? How about chemical stripping? I just want to make sure since I don't do anything to permanately damage them.

Chemicals should be fine. Just make sure they're neutralized or completely cleaned off. I'd prefer using a wire wheel or brush over sanding, the main focus on the t-bars is not to nick them so cracks don't have a place to form.

I would use a stripper and some steel wool to remove the paint.

Are you doing them or the coater? If the coater is doing them let him do the prep. If there is a problem with the coating he will be the one fixing them.

Bead blast or let the coater do it.

I was going to coat them myself; but I've only done small parts (brackets and various underbody parts) as practice, so I'm not sure I want to attempt it on such a vital suspension part.
