Topic: Power to Manual Steering 75 Dart (Read 463 times)

I have a 75 dart, wanting to know what it will all take to go from power to manual steering. All the manual steering boxes I have seen say up to 72, nothing for 73 and up darts. So will those fit, or what is the difference. I would probably buy the adapter extension from somewhere(Like from Mancini). Also will my pitman arm work with this or not?

OK, let me try different wording. The manual steering boxes that I have seen say 68-72 A-body. Will they not fit in 73-76? Or were they just a factory option in 68-72? I looked on mancini and they have a flaming river, but it says 68-74 a-bodys. Well I have a 75. Should I just call them? I really was looking at the factory aluminum case boxes.

Yes check out the link. Also, my '69 B body box bolted up fine to my '73 - '76 K member. And buy your adapter from Bill. It looks like this. Tom

OK, read the link, very helpful But now came up with a few more questions So from what I read, I currently have the large sector pitman arm. Can I buy a 68-72 manual steering box and a small sector pitman arm for this box for an a-body, and will it fit, or is it not that easy. Where can i get ahold of bill to get a connector?? Probably a dumb question. b569rr i like you brake setup. Is that something you made? Or can it be purchased, how about the internal linkage from the pedal, did that change? I'm thinking of getting rid of my power brakes also. My cam doesn't carry enough vacuum to work much at all.

Go ahead and find a manual box at the local swap and install the '73 to '76 manual steering pitman arm. The Moog pitman part number is available in the tech pages. Summit carries this part. The power steering pitman has an identical shape but has a bigger diameter splined hole to attach to the steering box.
As for the master cylinder it is used to offset the master cylinder 7/8" for future Hemi valve cover clearance. Mancini sells this offset plate. I made mine. You may not want to use the heavy iron piece like me (got a brand new one for free). Most guys run the aluminum two bolt style. Bill sells the offset plate for the two bolt M.C.
An adjustable brake pedal pushrod is required. I got mine from Mancini. You just swap the pushrod from one side of the brake lever to the driver's side i.e. 7/8".

Tom, on the flaming river adapter. Do you have the u-joint on the box or the column end ? It looks like you have it on the steering box but I saw pictures of ABodyJoes going the other way ?

The U joint is connected to the steering box because the joint in splined.

Thanks, Jay, money should be sent. I also liked the looks of Bill's adapter as suggested by Tom, so I just ordered one of those as well. I like the fact that it takes that coupler slop out. Hopefully it will fit around the headers better as well.

Jason, Thats the Flaming River piece. I bought the same one. Your right for $10 you get a nice stainless piece and a U-joint to get rid of the crappy mopar coupling.

I was wondering if anyone here has polished their steering box? If so what will it take? Is it like an intake manifold, or different type of aluminum?

There are 2 issues here. The "adapter" is to connect the steering column to the input shaft of the box. The manual box is shorter, requiring that dopey M/F adapter OR the U-joint type (much nicer) that Bill sells. The second issue is the output shaft, where there is a diff. in the sector size. 72 and earlier should be the small sector manual boxes. The PS boxes were also small sector. 73+ had large sector PS boxes, with the large sector pitman arm. Now....the question is.....does the large sector PS pitman arm fit on the large sector MS box from the C bodies and trucks? (question is also asked on the tech page! any answer???)
Also....the 73+ pitman arm changed part number for sector size....but what about shape? I think so because the idler arm also changed in 73. Dam...isnt' this Jim's territory???
Ive got a 73 PS box on my Swinger. I also have a large sector MS box that I bought by mistake. I'm going to check tomorrow if the PS Pitman with fit the LS MS box......Maybe I'll get lucky with it!

I pulled the pitman arm off the 73 Dart PS box. The pitman slipped right onto the large sector MS box. Both have 3/4" input shafts. both have 4 flats for indexing.... its a winnner...

Thanks to 71, got my manual steering box, got it cleaned up and polished!! My other car buddy thinks its weird to polish a steering box, but hey it looks damn good now It just took a few hours of cleaning the dirt and grime off of it, then with a polishing wheel on an angle grinder and a few more hours, then a few more hours of hand polishing, we are good to go. Now I just hope it will all fit together nicely. Also received the adapter from Bill, All I can say is NICE, VERY NICE. Worth the extra few bucks than the other guys adapters. Thanks for all the info and help, greatly appreciated!!

Always wondered why anyone would increase the speed of their car and decrease its handling ability? All Mopar power steering boxes are 15.7-1 turning ratio and can be tuned to different levels of feel. some manual boxes had sleeves early A-bodies, 20-1 turning ratio and very difficult to steer especially at low speeds. The later manual boxes had bearings with improved ease of turning but retained the same slow ratio. The Mopar couplers provide the capability to slip fore and aft about an inch, this reduces vibration in the steering wheel and provides flex without losing steering control. The universal joints do not provide this flexibility. The weight savings are negiable on a street driven car, would a more prudent approach be a power steering system with a Firm Feel?

The reason to go to a mopar manual box is the ease of the swap. You only need to lengthen the steering shaft 1" or so.... The reason for ditching the power box is usually the B/RB clearance on the stock box PS lines is non existant. Most of these cars are going straight anyway! .
