It fit like it was made for the '63 Dart. I put 15" cop car wheels on. They fill the wheel well out really nicely. PLenty of clearance. I'd rather had an 8 3/4", or probably even an 8 1/4", but I couldn't turn this one down for the money.........free! The 8" is a pretty stout rear, so if you want something that will bolt in without any trouble, the Maverick rear is almost the same dimensions. I was even able to move my brake lines off the 7 1/4", with minimal, and I mean "very minimal" bending to get them to match up. Bottom line, it's a great swap!

I've got a '63 1/2 Falcon too, and the stock 8" in it's pretty stout, though I'll probably go 9" or 8.8" in the distant future. The 8" is a pretty good starting point - a lot better than a 7 1/4"

There wasn't over a 1/4" difference in the spring perches. My brake lines from the 7 1/4" were still good, so I moved them over to the 8" also, with very little effort. My digital camera is semi-functional. If I get it working, I can take some pics and post.

i know street rodders use this swap,,an 8 inch out of a lincoln versalies,,,(not sure what that looks like) because they have rear disc brakes,,,,,,very kool even know its not a 8 3/4,,but hexk like you said it was free,,, and it fits,,,with the rising costs of 8 3/4 these days,,,a free swab is a good deal,,,

I bought a Dart with an 8 inch swapped into it. I guess he used the Mopar u-joint. It wasn't quite right, there was a little play in it and the straps didn't cover the cross. I blew u-joints like crazy. I swapped to 8 3/4...

i didnt meen to sound like you may have taken it,,sorrry,,all i ment was is that there are what they call bast**d u joints that are made that have 2 different sizes on the same joint,,made for custom applacations like what you had,,,
so if ya got a 8 or 9 inch laying around,,,use it,,,a u joint is cheaper then a different rear,,unless its freeeee
didnt meen sound sarcastic,,,,just trying to help,,,

Do the Maverick axles have 5 lugs? Are the wheels 5x4.5?

A small Moper joint and a small ford joint are the same except for the clip style on the cap. The mopar has a machined groove for the clip on the inside of the yoke and a ford has a smooth cap for the clip to fit outside of the joint in the driveshaft or transmission yoke. If I were to bet the real reason for going through U-joints is that a Ford offset and a Chrysler offset are different. More than likely you will see that the yoke sits approx 1-1/8" to far to the drivers side as compared to your stock rear. Just something I ran into in the past.

I have seen the maverick rears with both 5 and 4 lug. I think it depended on the options of the car.

It is possible, but I've only seen 5 lug Mavericks/later Comets... The 8" axles were either 4 or 5 lug in the early Mustangs and Falcons/early Comets and most that you see are converted to 5 lug if they didn't leave the factory that way. If you find any 8" at a yard, chances are they're 5 lug, but like small bolt pattern Mopar axles, a swap is easy and fairly cheap ( and Ford parts are far cheaper than Mopar parts ). here's a reference, they list Maverick axles as being exclusively 5 on 4.5" : http://www.mr2.com/TEXT/WheelBoltPatterns.txt

1969 1/2 , 1970 Maverick .1964 1/2-1965 Mustang with a 6 cyl. had the 4 lug wheels.Not a 8"! 5 Lug on 4 1/2' was 1971 & later. 8" and 9" 29 spline use the same axles. Look in a V-8 mustang 1965-1966,1976-1969 cougar,Maverick, mustangII,Pinto.

this doesn't supprize me any, I have also found that the '79 Granda's rear can be used as a swap in the later model '68-75 Darts , some of these Granada's have the 9" rears the ones with the 302 engines, although I'm not sure if it will fit the erlier year Darts? I just installed one over in a '66 stang and realized that this rear would easily work over in either my '71or '68 darts as well .

One was a 4 door, the other a 2 door. They looked rough, so I thought I might go back and see what's under them. I'm looking at a '39 Plymouth that it'd probably fit under pretty nicely too.
I think the Maverick I got my 8" out of was a '75. It does have 4.5" 5 lug pattern.

My 63 1/2 Falcon Futura came factory original with an 8" rear with the five lug ( 5 on 4.5" bolt circle ) pattern - my car is a factory V8, as well. Other than that, yes, the 65 and up Mustangs, Cougars and other vehicles that came with a V8 will all have either an 8" or 9" rear with five lugs. Obviously, you can see how many lugs they have when you look at them, and there is only one bolt circle, unlike Mopars.

I used the e-brake cables from the 7 1/4". They're very similar.

i used 2 spicer ujoints to make one get one for a 8 inch and one for the mopar drive shaft. use the ujoint cross for the mopar drive line and then use the 8 inch caps for the rear end. i will get the numbers for you in a little while.

ok the part numbers for the 2 ujoints are 5-1204x and 5-353x the last one (i think) is for the driveline. you need both these ujoints to make the conversion work. the ubolt for the yolk are 2-94-58x. good luck

i recently read an article,,where some one changed to a 9 inch,,and lost X amount of time in the quarter mile,,with the same gearing as the rear end that was taken out,,,i dont remember the time factor lost,,but in that article,,they mentioned,, that there is a bearing,im guessing the front pinion on a 9 inch,, that robbs about 30 horse power,,to turn,,

30 HP would create 70,638 BTUs/hr. or 2.6 gallons of water heating at a rate of 1 degree a second. That is boiling a spaghetti coldrun in 2.25 minutes, that is some heat! That is a lot of heat to go nowhere...but I get your point. That is an innefficient rear. You sure that is a bearing behind that ford pinion or just a flat washer!!
