Alternator retrofit
« on: February 02, 2007, 02:55:05 PM »

Right now I've got the stock ( I believe 65 amp ) alternator on my '74 318. I'm going to rewire the engine and was thinking about upgrading to the MagnumHP or Powermaster 100 amp internal regulator alternator. I'm also planning to use an MSD 6AL and 40,000v coil. Is there anything I should be concerned about? Like burning up gauges or other accessories?  Dunno Dunno

Any advise or instruction would be greatly appreciated.

You will have to upgrade the power wire from the alt.   I would bypass the alt guage in the dash, it will not handle that kind of current.  The easiest way to do this is to run a new wire from the alt directly to the battery, and abandon the original wire (make sure you insulate it well, cut the ring terminal off and put a piece of heat shrink over the end).  You should use a 4 or 6 gauge wire for this.  Then add a voltage gauge to your car so you can keep an eye on the charging status.
