« on: February 05, 2007, 09:19:51 PM »

how can I tell what year k member I have.I have a 67 dart Gt but I want to do the disk brake conversion and I have all new poly bushing and the whole nine yards for 73 to 76. I think I have to use a 73 and newer k so that all the steering will work.I have all the steering  stuff from a 73 dart but it is a 6cyl car.I have another v-8 k member but I don't know what year car it is from.

You can keep the K member but will need to change out the upper control arms so that the larger ball joint can be used. The spindles will also need to be changed from the later year A-Body car. All the brake calipars, dust sheild, ect will need to be transfered. The master cylinder and proportion valve will also need to be swapped over since you will have disk brakes up front  You are correct in that the K frame is different but you can keep the steering linkage the same with no changes, just new parts to freshen it up.  Cool Eric

The 67 k-member requires the use of 67-72 steering linkage and small sector steering gear. You can hang the disc brakes off of it, though. I would change to a 73-76 V8 k-member if you can find one.

I think what you are talking about is the difference of the IDLER arm on the 67 K frame. The 67 idler arm only had one support on the K frame. It was attached on both ends with a threaded shaft. This is a ONE YEAR ONLY item!

From 68 on, the idler arm was supported on the top AND the bottom. It attached with a through nut and bolt. If you use the 67 K frame the rebuild kit MUST specify the 67 idler arm which is much more expensive. All of the other suspension parts are the same from 67-72.

How can I tell what year the k member is.Is there a refrence # on it or is there some other way to tell? That is my question.I have all the steering disk brakes and everything to convert it to the big bolt pattern.I know I can't use the 73 and up stuff on the 67 K member.

Look at the place where the idler arm bolts on. If it looks like an angle iron perch with only ONE mounting point, it's a 67 K frame. All other K frames have a DOUBLE sided idler arm mounting setup.

Here's the 67:

Here's the 68 up:

Good Luck!

Hey thanks you are the man.Let me ask you another question that has nothing to do with this.Is there a web site to look up part #s off of parts to see what they belong to.I have a rad out of a 73 dart 6cyl that looks like a v-8 rad.Or is there some other way to tell?

Couldn't I just weld the tab on top and reinforce it and then it would be just like 68 and up?HuhHuhHuh

Welding would not be impossible, but it would be a PITA. (first word "pain"- work it out from there) The geometry would be hard to get right because the mounting pads are so different. I THINK that you can put the big bolt pattern discs on the 67 K frame as long as you order a rebuild kit with the 67 Idler arm. Double check me on that by going to the Mopar Action site. It's the best info on brakes that's out there.

http://www.moparaction.com/Tech/archive/disc-main.html

As far as the part numbers, the Galen Govier parts books are $16 each. Get the two part (casting) numbers ones. It's the best money you'll ever spend! Firestone's collectibles is a republe dealer who sells them. Here's a link to each:

Again, it's the most info for the least money that you can get!

Yes, you can hang any disc brake kit off the 67 k-member, but you need the 67 idler, center link and pitman arm. You can't just weld another tab on and use the later idler because the 67 tab is roughly in the center of where the 68-up bracket is located.

I checked my K member today and it is the one I needed. What a relief! Will the gear box off the 67 work on the newer k and will a 73 and up pitman arm work on the 67 gear box?

The later pitman arm will not work on the early box, but the box can be mounted to any k-member.

agree In the end you will be glad you went to the 73 up stuff, plus sway bars etc are an easy affair with 73 up compared to your 67-72 k frame.

The 67-72 front suspension is completely different than the 73-76 A-bodies.  The twisted lizzie drag link connects different than the latere models and the lower and upper ball joints are not the same size.  A 73-73 K-member with associated attachments is the best option.
