Topic: 2 x 3" subframe connectors (Read 722 times)

Has anyone here installed their homemade 2" x 3" subframe connectors with the 3" section verticle instead of flat against the floor? I'm thinking about doing this. It seems like it would be stiffer. I wouldn't mind the extra portion going into the floor. Thought I'd ask what ya'll think. Thanks.

I've done them both ways. I'm not convinced that mine is much stronger than the one I did horizontally. Actually it probably is, but I don't think that diff will be worthwile unless it's on a race application. I think you'd be fine doing them flat - and it's alot less work.

Yeah, but I seem to like doing things the hard way.

Mine are installed with the 3" horizontal and I penetrate the floor about 3/8". I agree with Carter.

Carter and Tom, did you guys use .125 wall or did you go with thinner wall stuff? I've got some 2 x 3 .125" tubing now. I'm wondering if it would be better to go save some weight and use 0.083" or similar.

its hard to find anything less than .125. i like them done vertically, and you can either cut open the end of the rame rail and silp them in or just weld a 1/8" plate over th eend of the rail and weld the connector to it.

What about 3X3 cut it out in the floor back to the rear seat step and weld it there also ??

My son andd I are taking a college welding class together and we have access to the 2"X3" .125 wall stock. We did buy a stick(20')of it so we had enough material to build 2 sets of them. One set will be going on his 68 and the other one is up for sale if someone needs them. These will be installed flat and yes they will be thru the floor about 1/2".. Anyway...that is how we are doing it..

If I use .083" wall 2x3, can I weld the outriggers from the main hoop of the roll cage directly to them or would I have to also use a 6"x6" .125 plate weld to the floor?

Thanks Carter. But is that .083 wall or .125"? I notice they require 6 x 6 1/8" plate. I figured that meant if my subframe connectors are thinner than 1/8", I couldn't weld directly to the .083". Does this make sense?

Hmmmm... well if it was me I'd weld straight to it. Two reasons - 1) .083 is thick enough and 2) I doubt anyone will ever sonic check your cage. They wouldn't expect you to weld a plate to the top of the outrigger. It's just not done that way (as far as I know).
