keep'n it legal
« on: February 08, 2007, 10:57:13 AM »

ok, so what do i have to do to keep my car NHRA legal when i put a fuel cell and the battery in the trunk? my plan is to use a 20gal aluminum cell with the sump in the spare tire well. mount the pump in the well and drill a hole to run the fuel line under the car, and then mount the battery on the pass. side. any suggestions on the cell or battery box? i was thinking about one of the powdercoated cells from summit, but the batt. box is still open for discusion.

You will def. need to cut out the spare tire well to fit a 20gallon tank.  I had to with a 15gallon tank.

I have a 16 gal.cell with a sump in the well. I will need a fire wall to keep it NHRA legal.

sorry, i think i should make myself a little more clear. i'm thinking of building some frame work to mount the cell to, so it will actually sit on the trunk floor and the cell sump will be "hanging" in the spare tire well. i will then mount the pump in the spare well to keep it out of harms way, since it is a street car.

the only issue I can see with that is if you had to work on the pump or lines and there was a full cell on top, it might be hard to get to.

You will need a fire wall between the trunk and pass area, You will also need a cut off switch for the battery.  Dave

The stock fuel tank on the Dart was leaking...so we removed it. Thought about putting a fuel cell in the truck but also want to move the battery back there too..Dont want to get too many things back there that could cause us issues since it is a street driven car.  Who makes a custom tank for under the car???  And since we are not going to need a electrical fuel pump the fuel cell would need to be plumb'd out the bottom of the tank...
Springs are going to be moved inboard so it will push the exhaust that much closer to the tank..

Thanks

Gotcha.  I was going to do that also, but since I am gearing the Scamp more towards handling I wanted to keep the weight as low as possible.  I have seen a few people mount the fuel cell the way you are describing.  As long as you can keep the fuel cell far enough forward to leave room for the lines coming out it should work fine.

they say .024"steel or .032" aluminum as minimum thickness for the fire wall.

there are 2 other areas that allow vapours ect to get into the drivers compartment, normally they are covered with cardboard and thin fabric so they go unnoticed.
they are the C-pillar and the area were the rear window regulator is.

Would removing the back seat back give enough access to cover it all up???  My son and I were talking about that last night.. The seat is out now so that we can open up the floor pan for the frame connectors..might be a good time to cover the stuff up..

I believe www.4secondsflat.com/ has a fuel cell that fits in the spare tire wheel well.
