40 bucks sounds kinda cheap. I guess if you use quality holesaws with it, how bad could it be?

Harbor Freight sells only the cheapest garbage made overseas. I would look for a used set-up before sending a penny to HF. Check out craigslist or Ebay. Just my humble opinion.

I have one of those elcheapo units. I had to make a small brace for the back to hold it in my drill press. Once braced properly it worked great ... you will need a deep hole saw to cut the notches in one pass. I got the deep hole saw from S&W Race cars. once I had the deep hole saw it worked really well .. i have used it to install several cages in several cars ...

This thread got me thinking about tubing notching. I have this book from Monster Garage called How to Fabricate Damn Near Anything. I first bought the welding book as a goof, but it turns out to be damn good. Anyway, I think there was a section in the fabrication book about using a plasma cutter to notch tubing. It looks like it worked pretty good, also, the plasma cutter is way more versatile if you had to spend money on a tool. I know it's way more than a tubing notcher, but if you plan on getting one someday, here's another use for it.

I know this may not be the same thing but here is my results with Harbor Freight..
1. Gear Press ....Piece of junk! We used it to press out the bushings and ball joints on my 97 Dodge 2500..What a waste of money. 2. Mig welder car...PoJ..it nearly layed down twice..Took it back 3. Air die grinder...All I have to do is show it metal and it stops working.. 4. Drill bits..I have to have my wife heat up the butter so that they will drill threw it 5. 2 speed polisher/sander..used it for 10 minutes and the switch shorted out 6. Floor jacks...great buy! 7. 4 wheel floor furniture dolly(3) works great!
Moral of this story.....buy only stuff from H.F. that you dont mind throwing away..

Of course. Like I said, if you were going to possibly get one anyway, you could also notch tubing with it.

I got the notcher from Summit and it's great. Don't need a drill press, just bolt it to a bench and use a 1/2" electric drill. Works beautifully.

To fishmouth the ends of the tubes where they connect to other tubes. It's how you fit the door bars to the main hoop, for example. All joints have to be super tight for good welding.

No kidding - Dale Wilch from RPM Catalog? And he's right - buy some Lenox hole saws and you'll be really happy.

Thanks guys. I know everyone has their preference. But for something I may only use once, there is no sense in buying an expensive notcher. Harbor freight it is. THANKS

Like was said earlier, just get Lenox. Those are great. I haven't bought any for a while, but I know they're not exactly cheap. Don't be misled into inferior ones by a lower cost. Lenox holesaws will make that 40 dollar tool operate nicely.
