Eastwood Rust Disolver and Evapo-Rust, it works!
« on: February 14, 2007, 01:08:12 PM »

I bought a gallon of Eastwood's Rust Dissolver and I gave it a try I have had some parts soaking for 24 hours. I have to say I am EXTREMELY impressed. My parts were 38 year old rusty suspension pieces, they look like new now. Here are some pictures.

This product works great for anything that can be soaked in it, I submerged heavily rusted suspension pieces, it removed paint, grease, rust and dirt. The parts came out beautiful. This stuff only works on parts that can be completely submerged. Don't beleive the directions, it takes a few days to remove rust from heavily rusted pieces, not minutes and hours like the directions say. Also, forget the quart, forget the gallon, buy 5 gallons and keep it in a 5 gallon bucket, Its just easier than having to turn the pieces every few hours. Also, I rinsed the bolts with water and they flash rusted while drying. Later I tried spraying them off with brake cleaner, that worked well. I am going to dip the flash rusted parts again and this time spray them in WD40.

I recently found out that Evapo-Rust is the same as the Eastwood product, but a whole lot cheaper, it is available in a 5 gallon, which I recently bought for $70 plus $26 shipping. This stuff work great, it has been used by engine shops and the military for derusting without removing any extra metal.

Also, ckeck out the pinion snubber, I left it half dipped overnight, amazing difference.

Yeah, that has been know for a while, but.........it removes rust and METAL! If you leave a part in too long, it will disappear! It also does not work as well, it seems to work on loose rust first, so there will still be some rust left over while the good metal is being eaten away. It works ok for really heavy metal pieces with light rust where metal erosion is not critical. The process is like a reverse of chroming, but instead of adding metal, you are removing metal, it just so happens that the rust is on top of the metal, so it comes off along with the metal underneath.

Here is some info from the website.

"EVAPO-RUST is easy to use. Fully immerse the rusted item in EVAPO-RUST and check progress in about 30 minutes; no scrubbing necessary. Soak times will vary from 30 minutes to 24 hours depending on severity of rust, type of steel, and temperature. EVAPO-RUST is water based, therefore the active molecules will slow down as temperature decreases and increase as temperature increases. We recommend utilizing EVAPO-RUST at a bath temperature above 60° F.

EVAPO-RUST has a surfactant to aid in penetrating oils and dirt. However, surface contaminants do slow the process and can shorten the life of EVAPO-RUST . Oils, greases and cosmoline should be removed prior to de-rusting. Cleaning the part prior to soaking in EVAPO-RUST will also help in the disposal of the spent product.

EVAPO-RUST works at a pH of 6.1 to 7 (neutral) through selective chelation. This is a process in which a large synthetic molecule forms a bond with metals and holds them in solution. Most chelating agents bind many different metals. The active ingredient in EVAPO-RUST bonds to iron exclusively. It can remove iron from iron oxide, but is too weak to remove iron from steel because the iron is held much more strongly."

I am on my 3rd batch of this stuff, I was buying it in 1 gallon sizes, but this time I got a 5 gallon size so I can dip both heads in it. Here is where I bought it from. I paid for it on Sunday and got it today.

if any of you have seen the new "trucks" a couple of weeks ago, heres what they did

fill up a rubbermaid with water

add a tbsp of baking soda for every pint of water

take a battery charger and hook the neg onto the part

hook the positive to a strip of metal the you stick hanging out of the water

put it in and let sit for 48 hours

looks just as good as what those pictures are

I have also heard that one guy blew out 3 battery chargers to make that work, sounds like its a lot more expensive to me.

I don't think it was baking soda.  It was something different.  I'm pretty sure the guy on trucks used washing soda.

I might do some experimenting with that, but I'm still skeptical, Evapo-rust and Rust-dissolver have proven themselves to me already.

FYI.......Update

I decided to try using Molassis as a chelating rust remover.

I bought 2 12oz bottles of Molasis and mixed them with 2 gallons of hot water. I then poured it into a container and dipped a rear shacle mount in it, I let it sit for 2 weeks. When I took the part out, it had cleaned the rust a little, but was no where near done, having to start putting my suspension back together made me cancel the experiment. I took it out, washed it off, and dipped it into some Evapo-rust, 3 hours later, it was free of rust, I painted the part, then re-installed it in the car.

My conclusion, Molasis is a very cheap rust remover, but it works very slowly, and does not work very well on heavily rusted parts. Evaporust did in 3 hours what molassis could not do in 2 weeks.

BTW, Molassis starts to ferment a spoil after a while, my garage stunk like an old dirty hooker. And that is putting it mildly.

I read on Massmopars where a guy used powdered molassis that he got from a feed store and did a whole short block in it.  It had to set for a couple weeks but he said it worked good on a seized up short block.  I may try it when i get around to it.

Yep, this is the article:
http://www.massmopar.com/yabb/YaBB.pl?num=1137265869

It does work ok, just no where near as fast, and if you look at his pictures, it really is not very well de-rusted. I have used Evaporust and it works better and faster. Its a matter of time. If you soak a peice for months, it might get rid of all the rust, possibly.

agree  I was thinking of that method just for getting a seized engine apart without having to beat on it and possibly cause more damage.  I have several articles on the electrolasis method as well but that only woks line of site.  That evapo-rust you used looks like the ticket for really cleaning part's that need to be clean to hold paint etc.

After using the Evapo-Rust, the cleaned parts can be dipped in POR-15 Metal Ready to prevent that rust haze from forming on the part. Just my 2ct.s

That's what the US Navy uses, they soak complete deisel engines in huge vats of Evapo-rust to get rid of corrosion. I actually soaked my complete head assemblies in it before I took them apart. The Valves were rusted in place and I did not want to damage the guides. I took them out before they were done, because I needed to get them apart, I am going to soak them again when I am ready to put them back together.
