started on the subframe connectors
« on: February 17, 2007, 01:41:20 AM »

I started on the subframe connectors today and thought I'd share some pictures.  I decided to run the 2 x 3 .125 wall tube with the 3" portion verticle just to make it hard on myself.  I drilled some holes on the part that slips over the rear framerail so I can get some plug welds in.  I'm not sure if that will help any.  I'm also thinking of adding a u-shaped portion in front to sort of incase the crossmember where it welds to in front.  This will probably be overkill, but I'm having fun cutting and welding.  It's my first time doing this stuff.  Hopefully I'll have pictures of the install tomorrow for you guys to see.

agree.....good job, seems well thought out too. I would rather have a little overkill than not enough.

Thanks guys.  I decided to add a little more overkill strength to where they mount in the front.  I haven't welded them in yet, but here is what they look like under the car.  Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do for my parking brake cable.

Thanks guys.  I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to do for an e-brake.  Do you think I can just weld a piece of angle iron on the bottom of the drivers side subframe connector and drill the appropriate size hole for it?  That way the cable would run under the connector.  Or should I just use it's stock location and drill a hole in the subframe connector for the cable to go through?  Any ideas?

there is usually enough room to dril a new hole along the old one so it will be outside the frame connector ... or if the only part of of the frame connector that interfers is the front flange then drill that puppy out and letr' rip

I ran my cable under the connector.  Just cut a piece of round tube in half and tack it to the bottom to capture the cable where you want it.

For the e-brake, I made a new set of holes farther outboard and above the flange on the frame connector. The hole is bigger on the front side of the crossmember than the rear, and the rear hole has to be the right size to capture the e-brake bushing. Just duplicate the hole sizes, and make sure they are in line! Great looking installation!
