Im thinking of a change from small bolt pattern to large bolt pattern on my car. I may buy a set of the Yukon axles for my A-body. Can I use my stock 10 x 1 3/4" shoe backing plates? Was wondering if they were the same as the 10 x 2.5" 8 3/4 rearend backing plates..... ??

I think the backing plates will work? I put on some of those C-body brakes with the big cooloing fins.....might change to B-body....would drop a few pounds.... I just woke up....

the 10 X 1 3/4 plates are different from the 10 X 2.5" plates ... .the offset of the axle remains the same no matter what brake setup you have, they changed the offset depth of the backing plate to match the drums. the spreader bar for the E brake setup is also different between the two. hit the junkyard and grab all the stuff for a 10x 2.5 setup ...

that makes sense. I guess they turn back in toward the center section to allow wider brakes??maybe....

Sorry guys, but this is a "BEEN THERE/DONE THAT" thing for me!!
THE A BODY 8 3/4 10 inch BACKING PLATES ARE DIFFERENT FOR SMALL BOLT PATTERN AXLES!!!!
It works like this: The OFFSET on an A body axle is different. (I think 1/4 inch). If you use REDRILLED A BODY SMALL BOLT AXLES, you HAVE TO USE the ORIGINAL backing plates and redrill the drums. You CANNOT use B/E backing plates with redrilled A body axles.
If you CUT DOWN B/C body axles or buy aftermarket version duplicates, then you CAN use the B/E body backing plates.
Just remember: A body axles, A body plates
B/C/E body axles, B/C/E body plates. Good Luck!

What does one use when using an A-body axle made by Yukon?? Its an aftermarket axle, 28" like the original but uses the big bolt pattern. I would need big bolt pattern drums, so I assume I would need different backing plates correct??....Cant use my originals is what I understand??

I'm not real familiar with the Yukons, but the Mosers are all the same offset as the B/C/E body unless Mosier cuts and redrills your existing SBP A body axles. You might ask the Yukon people when you order. I'm certain they are familiar with the offset difference.

I have Yukon axles and I used the brakes off of a 76 C-body. So, my guess would be get rid of the SBP A-body brakes and run the B/C body stuff if you want drums. I did see a truck in the yard I think it was a mid 70's half ton with what looked like B-Body brakes too.

The Yukon A body axles have the same offset. You can use the C boat brake stuff on the A body housing with the new Yukon Axles ... done it several times ...

Suregrip - if you end up getting the 10 x 2.5" brakes, I'd like to buy the ebrake stuff from your 10 x 1.75" brakes. I can't find those parts anywhere! Please let me know.

Suregrip, I make atleast a run a week to the wreckers. We have a few good pick a parts here. I should be able to find you something. I will be going there probably thursday or Friday. They want $50 for complete sets of rear drums. You would be responsible for the parts, S+H. You can Email me at pavedarrin@yahoo.com if you want to do this. that also includes whatever ebrake cable is attached. let me know Darrin

If the auction ends without a bid, we'll work something out. I'm just gonna scrap em if they don't sell.
