« on: December 26, 2005, 03:21:04 PM »

i want to port and pollish a set of stock 400 heads. im not sure what castings they are. i just rebuilt them new matched springs for the cam, new seals and valves. should i port and pollish or just gasket match? if i do port what would be the best way. i have a old set of 318 heads to try first. this will be my first set to try. then ill try the 400 heads. thank you

Get the porting templates from MP. They will prove invaluable for learning . Do not port match the exhaust. The biggest gains come from working the bowls . Take your time and the results will be well worth it.

Have your machinest cut the throat area on the serdi machine first. Then you just blend in the bottom of the throat and match the intake to a gasket. The serdi throat cut will remove the same material the templates would but alot easier. Then give the heads back to your machinest to complete the valve and guide work.

I don't know anything about machining and I've never used a die grinder.? However, I would like to learn by porting my own heads!? lol bash Will I do OK? I was told that it's not a hard job at all just takes a lot of time.? I'm willing to take hours upon hours since it's gonna take me a long time to finish my engine and I would like to be working on SOMETHING for that whole period of time to keep me motivated.? I'm pretty good at catching on with tools so I'm hoping I will do OK. Anyone have any suggestions for me? Its not too easy to completely mess up the heads, is it? I'm doing this on 213 heads.
thank you

Get the templates and do the job your build requires. Take your time. Nothing worse than getting in a hurry and ruining the heads.

Read These articles. They will guide you to some good improvements, even with stock valve sizes.
