General Motors is likely to become the new owner of the Chrysler Group. That's according to reports in the financial press today, which suggest that DaimlerChrysler bosses and investors would be happy with a deal that included a significant shareholding in GM in return for Chrysler.
It's almost two weeks since DaimlerChrysler boss Dieter Zetsche made it known that DC was considering “all options” to secure a profitable future for both the German and American arms of its business.
Over that time, several possibilities have been mooted. Hyundai was linked with a Chrysler Group buyout and then publicly distanced itself from the sale. Several Chinese car manufacturers were also reported to be preparing bids, as were various private equity firms in the U.S.
The reason DC bosses are reported to favor a deal with GM is that the General knows what it takes to run a global car company, and has sufficient industrial capital, both in the States and elsewhere, to make the cost savings necessary to turn Chrysler's business around. The Chrysler Group made a loss of nearly $1.5 billion last year; greater economies of scale and far-reaching production tie-ups will be essential parts of its recovery.
One of DaimlerChrysler's shareholders told the Financial Times that DC bosses “are interested in who takes Chrysler over and they would be happy to take equity in GM in return.”

Hey relax, I don't think anyone on this site is looking forward to 2045 in hopes of restoring a 2008 Plymouth or Dodge (notice I did not say Mopar....that ceased to exist years ago). That's why "we" do what "we" do, restore old Mopars. They don't make them any more. How many times have YOU whipped out a pack of matches to set the points? I'm talking about getting it running, after it quits, just to get it home. Now you need a f*+^#n computer so you pay to have it towed to some idiot, with pimples, making $12.00 / hour while paying $76.00 / hr to the owner for a "diagnosis"! Gee, let me tell my customers to bring their house to me and pay me $76.00 for an estimate. I would hope that 50 years in the future someone will care enough about Mopars to restore the car I'm restoring, not a 2008 model. Oh well, maybe I'm a dreamer. A parting thought. Toyota Camry is the only car on the NASCAR Nextel circuit this year made in the US. Dodges and Fords are made in Canada and Mexico. I'm not sure about the GM's. We already lost the Chrysler Group.

I am not shure on the details anymore but this almost happend in post ww1 or 2 like i said i dont remember ,but what i do recall is walter p chrysler refused to sell out to ford. Gm was on the verg at that time as well but somehow chrysler convinced to gm not to sell out...to think if all we had for options was ford ! If this does happen,is chrysler going to be like oldsmobile and just slowly fade away

I really don't worry about the newer stuff they turn out, as I can't afford what they charge for most of the ugly cars they build today, what I REALLY worry about, is PARTS for our OLDER cars, both NOS, aftermarket and performance parts. I would also wonder about the fate of Mopar Performance. Sure it won't be an over night panic, but I'm worried about what will happen in the next five to ten years or so. That WILL affect ALL of us in this hobby today. Richard

Yeah really, they're losing more money then Chrysler was, yet they're the ones buying Chrysler. That makes SO much sense. The minute that Chrysler merges with GM is the final day of the existence of Mopar as far as I'm concerned.

Honestly I'm not at all worried about GM buying Chrysler. I don't think they'd cut the company up and sell it off because that'd be big mistake. Chrysler can be very profitable with the right backing and I think if GM bought it then we'd at least have our mopars even if their supported by gm I mean theres already so much cross branding in parts it's not a huge deal to me that Chrysler be owned by gm
