You guys that paint, do you use the internal filter they put in the gravity feed guns? I can't get mine to spray worth a crap with it in there.

I use the 3M pot system and they have a filter in the cup lid but don't have a filter in my gun.

the 3M disposable system is the cats ass, but you should still run some sort of in-line moisture filter. either a permanent style setup, or i've had good luck with the throw away jobs as well.

I got a Sharpe Finex and it has a plastic screen type filter that goes between the cup and the gun body. I'm guessing it isn't a big deal to spray without it?
Thanks bOb

I have an old Binks model 62 that works well but there is just too much overspray for my little garage. I bought a Harbor Freight HVLP gun that I couldn't get to spray right. It had the filter in it to but I never tried it without it. I heard good things about the Finex from some members here and decided to try it. With the filter in it and the flow control wide open @ 8-10 psi the finish is like sandpaper and yes the gun is clean. I take the filter/screen out and she sprays well. I'm guessing it is ok to use it w/o the filter/screen as Bob's doesn't have one and my Binks conventional doesn't have one. I do use one of those disposable filters at the gun.

Dont worry about the filter in the cup. take it out. make sure you have an air filter in the line though. just keep your paint clean and mix in clean cups.

That internal filter also will clog and prevent you from using a metallic. As far as in line filters, There are several types. I use a dessicate(Changes color when wet) which comes right off the compressor and is disposible and a final "Ball" paper element at the gun.(They also have a dessicate style for right at the gun) Best thing if you have access to a booth(There are many Body shops) that rent their booths on weekends for around 100.00-150.00 that have dryer systems on them. Always drain your AC if you dont have a dryer or prefilters on the AC...use 2 50' hoses and make several loops..it will hold some or the majority of the moisture it might create and the final filter will catch what might be left. If your garage painting, try to paint when there in mininum humidity..thus less moisture in the comp.
My guns are Sharpe(T1's) 1.2 and 1.6 BC/CC System with optional conversion to the "3M Playtex cups" and Binks. I even have a Binks gold cup syphon that I wouldnt trade for every HVLP ever made.
