Never gave it much thought on cars, but on large trucks ,the springs could not be "gull winged" when loaded. That is the center higher than the shackle ends.

I have a 72 dart, the leaf springs are flat, with weight.  It is not going to hurt anything, its all in how you want your ride to sit. The car should corner better with a flat/flatter spring. Personally, I like the rear to sit a bit higher, I am looking for a set of leafs that will do that.  I dont know what effect it will have on your traction. Probably not help it any. If you do get a new set of springs, let us/me know how it sits, and which springs you got, thanks.

just make a longer shackle for it with some flat stock and grade 8 bolts, less than $15

btw, shocks don't effect ride hight at all

Shocks can raise ride height if you install air shocks and pump the hell out of them.  You'll be riding in the clouds.  Thats about as jury rigged as it gets though... Next to long ass rear shackles of course.

I have air shocks in my dart, I was using them to raise the cars rid height, but after reading posts I dont want to do that anymore. When you use the air shocks to raise the ride height, you are putting the weight of the car on the shock mounts. The bottom mount can probably take it, but the top mount is stamped sheet metal attached to the body. It may give out.

An old "trick" that people use is to order "high lift" shocks from JC Whitney so that the tires don't rub, either front or rear, or both. But like notenuffcash said, you're compromising the quality of the ride, and safety, by putting the weight of the car on the shock mounts / body. That's why it is so important to install the correct length shocks, and why there are so many endless application guides for both stock and modified suspensions.

What are the dimensions of the leafs on our A-Bodies?  I was curious on how many inches the arch was and how many lbs/inch would be ideal.

Thanks and sorry for the thread jack.

I have used add-on helper coil springs for my shocks before on my Dakota, I lowered the truck and the springs were too soft, the coils helped and actually worked OK.

right, you shouldn't use air shocks to raise the ride hight- while your at it, why don't you just take out the leaf springs lol bash buy taller springs, drop front mount, longer shackle

The correct ride height for a passenger car leaf spring is the leaf to be slightly concave, almost flat. You should be able to draw a straight line from the front eye through the bottom of the axle housing (top of the spring pin) through the rear shackle lower eyelet.

An arched spring is fine for straight line acceleration, but causes oversteer in a turn. This because the rear axle center line shifts outward as the outboard tire receeds in to the fenderwell.

A collapsed leaf spring causes just the opposite. Understeer in a turn.

A flat leaf spring car will have a more predictable steering response, and a safer one.

O.K. This is some good information. Now I have called a few spring companys, and have quotes of about 200 dollars delivered. Now what if I used longer shackles? In the rear of the spring? What effect will that have? I am pinched for money, trying to make every dollar stretch. I want to raise the ride height 2".

Are you going for that ugly 1970s Starsky and Hutch look? Why would you want to raise a 2 wheel drive 2"? You'll shift the balance of your car forward, and get less traction and horrible handling. Why don't you just relocate the springs or mini-tub if you want bigger tires?

P.S. Shackles are only in the rear of the spring, it's a cheap fix for sagging springs to add an adjustable shackle, and you can make one for pennies, but if your springs are shot, just buy some new reproductions - you want flat springs and a level car.

I dont look anything like starsky or hutch.... except the muschtache maybe. The car sits too low in the rear for my liking. The Bankers Toy has the ride height that I am looking for.

If the rear sags lower than the front, then you need to replace the springs. But you don't want to jack up the back of your car, as it's hell for handling and it shifts all the rear weight to the front, so you lose traction ( it's great for a burn-out machine though ), plus it looks like sh*t. I remember all the Mustangs and Novas in high school that rode around on longer shackles, and they looked and performed like complete crap, except for smoking the tires out of the parking lot...

Both my son's 72 Dart and my 66 Coronet use Mopar Super Stock leaf springs and KYB gas shocks. Pictures below.

thank you I really like the Super Stock springs and KYB shocks and with all of the front suspension work that was done on both cars, they also handle pretty well for the old school technology that they use.
