Water Based Paint - Good or Bad?
« on: March 19, 2007, 12:40:02 PM »

Well the Valiant is in the body shop and should be painted in the next few weeks.  The painter is recommending using a new water based paint, said theres some wild new colors out. Just wondering if anyone has used it, how it turned out or any opinions. From what I've read on the net it sounds like it's the way to go.  I've seen show cars with it, but no street duty  cars. Anyone have experience with it?

I wouldn't be the first on my block to try it...............................From what I've heard it's not very forgiving.

Seems like i'm always afraid of "NEW" stuff..sorta of like cars.If it's the new model i wait a couple years to work the bugs out.I can't possibly see how the colors could be any better than what they have out now.  JMO.

if anybody here drives modern mopars,  they're all wearing water based paint.  i believe all the clearcoats are still solvent based. (at least ours are in belvidere).  chrysler switched to water based paint for E.P.A. guidlines, etc.  the switch was around 10-15 yrs. ago.  our basecoat paint must be baked to cure.

I OWN MY OWN SHOP,   AND BUILD CUSTOM OLD SKOOL BOBBERS AND CHOPPERS.   WATER BASED PAINTS ARE NOTHING NEW,  THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS ,  THEY  STARTED OVER SEAS .  THE ONLY THING NEW ABOUT THEM IS THERE NEW TO THE USA   ,NOT EVEN REALLY NEW JUST MORE GUYS ARE USING THEM MORE NOW.  THEY HAVE SOME REALLY GREAT COLORS , COLORS YOU WONT SEE IN MOST PAINT CHARTS , COLORS THAT YOU COULD ONLY GET IF YOU HAD IT CUSTOM MIXED.   AND THEN IF YOU GET IN A WRECK AND DIDNT HAVE THE BODY SHOP MIX UP EXTRA PAINT,   THEN YOU WILL NEVER MATCH IT .   THATS ONE THING ABOUT THERE CUSTOM COLORS IS THAT THEY ARE REGULAR STOCK ITEMS.   SO IF YOU NEED MORE THEY HAVE IT RIGHT ON THE SHELF.   I SEE ALOT OF HIGH DOLLAR CUSTOM BIKES AND OLD SKOOL RODS USING THIS PAINT AND THE STUFF LOOKS GREAT .   ALOT OF THE REALLY WILD CUSTOM PAINT JOBS,  THAT ORANGE COUNTY CHOPPERS HAS,   OUR DONE WITH WATER BASED PAINT.   AND TONS OF CARS AND BIKES AT SEMA LAST YEAR WERE PAINTED WITH WATER BASED PAINTS.   I HAD A CUSTOMER WHO WANTED HIS BIKE PAINTED IN WATER BASED PAINT,  BECAUSE HE COULDNT FIND THE COLOR HE WANTED ANYWHERE ELSE.  THE CARS AND BIKES IVE SEEN WITH MY OWN EYES TURNED OUT REALLY GREAT AND LIKE I SAID THEY HAVE SOME REALLY DIFFERNT COLORS YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYWHERE BEFORE  .ANYWAYS THATS WHAT I KNOW ABOUT WATER BASE PAINT... { WWW.OLDSKOOLBOBBERS.COM  }

Thanks Guys. Hagen thank you, this clears up quite a bit. It obviously holds up to UV (UV protection in the clearcoat maybe??) so it should be ok to use. I didn't necessarily have to have water based, but my painter recommends it, says it's good stuff, so as long as it turns out ok and holds up, I'll be happy.    thank you
