Help! SSBC A body brake kit....
« on: March 21, 2007, 03:50:22 PM »

Hey guys. We got our SSBC disc brake conversion kit in today and began the installation. However, the adapter does not fit my spindle, because the bolt holes do not line up porperly. According to SSBC we got all the correct parts, but in the instructions they gave us, the spindles look completely different. The spindle "arm" in the picture is straight up and down and is centered with the rest of the spindle... on my two cars, the spindle is offset to the left. I double checked with my Cuda's spindle, and it appears to be the same as the Demon's. Both are factory power drum brake cars. I'd appriciate any help and advice. Again, it's a '72 Demon we're doing the conversion on.

Thanks in advance guys!

Haha yes I flipped the plate. Did you have 9" or 10" drum brakes originially?

Mmm... ok so I called SSBC. They said that their kits only work with the 10" drum spindles. They didn't mention that when I ordered from them, and I know the guy that actually placed the order told them on the phone what I had to start with. They told us their kit just used the old spiindles, which is not true.  Frustrated So now I need to track down someone locally who has 10" spindles... Frustrated

Same with a Willwood kit. You need the bigger brake spindles to make the kit work or fit.  Most V/8 cars with drum brakes up front have the bigger spindles. Bolt pattern small or big don't matter.

I switched my 340 Duster from drums to a Willwood kit yrs. ago.

if this helps at all.

That's why I like www.mpbrakes.com. Their kits come with spindles.

The 9" spindles are weak anyway. I'll have to look, but I may have a spare set of 10" spindles.

Thanks guys. I went with SSBC because a guy I know is a distributor for their product and I got a HUGE discount on the kit. I called DVAP this afternoon and I'm waiting on a return call. I dont really want to buy from them, but if worst comes to worst, I'll make the drive to pick up a pair anyways.

And thank you for lookin' for me Jim, I really appriciate it.

Got a set here if needed. I bought them to do the exact conversion you are working on, but I ended up with an entire '75 front end for cheap and no longer need them. In PA.

Wilwood does have a kit for 9" drums. But, I agree with Jim - those spindles are a bit TOO spindly for a performance car.
