PROJECT S6 to V8 -what's REALLY needed?
« on: December 26, 2005, 07:54:44 PM »

OK. a shopping list of what is needed to do my planned 64  S6 to V8 (SB) conversion with the school kids.  The plan would be to build a quick, VERY good handling car.

1) V8 drop centerlink (1" more drop than S6)  (Ffound one, it should arrive next week)
2) L.side exhaust solution  (I'm going with early 273 CI manifolds  (got them)
3) V8 mounts  (easy enough....Schumacher)  (just gotta make a call)
4) LBP Disks: 73 Disk setup with UCAs (gottem")
5) 8 1/4 suire-grip with 3.55s (got it)

Questions raised; comments or solutions?

1)  V8 gas pedal assy....are they really diff. than S6???
2)  Radiatior?  Upper tank hose usually not an issue, lower?  SB lower tank outlets moved from L (drivers) to R in the late 60's.  Outlet sizes change too S6? SB? BB?
3)  Later (donor 1967) 904 speedo drive not compatible with 64 speedo?  true?  what's the fix.
4) Custom driveshaft needed.
5) shfiter for 904?  (floor / console?)
6) Front sway bar options?
7) rear sway bar options on a stock A body 8 1/4?
Cool frame connections or any suggestion on stiffening the structure so it will handle?

9) A L T E R K A T I O N  ? ? ? ? ?

1)  V8 gas pedal assy....are they really diff. than S6??? ---yes
2)  Radiatior?  Upper tank hose usually not an issue, lower?  SB lower tank outlets moved from L (drivers) to R in the late 60's.  Outlet sizes change too S6? SB? BB?-- Get a 273 Rad or go aluminum.
3)  Later (donor 1967) 904 speedo drive not compatible with 64 speedo?  true?  what's the fix.-- I'm in that pickle myself (BB though)
4) Custom driveshaft needed.-- I mesured to fit with 727/ 8 3/4
5) shfiter for 904?  (floor / console?) --Go floor with cable  (my opinion)
6) Front sway bar options?-- unless you are going out on a roundy round, no need.
7) rear sway bar options on a stock A body 8 1/4?-- see above
frame connections or any suggestion on stiffening the structure so it will handle? see the tech section of the old board.

9) A L T E R K A T I O N  ? ? ? ? ?  If you can afford it, Bill's wife needs a new house. Grin

I was very lucky cause my parts car was a 63 A body BB conversion. i had most done for my 65. What I have learned is that every car is different.

Here's my take on this (notice I will near mimic Rob's Replies)

1)? V8 gas pedal assy....are they really diff. than S6??? YES this should be next on your hit list!
2)? Radiatior?? Upper tank hose usually not an issue, lower?? SB lower tank outlets moved from L (drivers) to R in the late 60's.? Outlet sizes change too S6? SB? BB? Not too hard to find..most 22" early Chrysler rads are the same except the mounts (which are brazed on)
3)? Later (donor 1967) 904 speedo drive not compatible with 64 speedo?? true?? what's the fix. Haven't done this yet..no answer sorry
4) Custom driveshaft needed. Best easiest answer
5) shfiter for 904?? (floor / console?) 1966 and later consule shift..or an aftermarket shifter..whichever you like best!
6) Front sway bar options? After market, do a google search for "Lame Horse Racing" then search within results for Formula S.. he has it mapped out!
7) rear sway bar options on a stock A body 8 1/4? See above
frame connections or any suggestion on stiffening the structure so it will handle? I do like frame connectors see the tech pages they are easy to fab
9) A L T E R K A T I O N? ? ? ? ? ? When Bill can give me one, it would make my FirePower shoehorn job sooooo much easier! I will install it before the UPS driver starts his truck! If you can afford it, Go For IT! Grin

You have done a good job getting the other parts together, but finding stock early V8 mounts might save you some dough...so you can aford number 9!!

JC Whitney has front and rear sway bars by Hellwig for a very attractive price.  Free shipping as well.

Hey bbscamp, make sure you check out the 65 Barracuda thread in this forum. There may be some available parts not that far from you.

Nice looking 64 engine bay. My 65 has a 22".  I think either one would work fine.

Nice to see you building a 'handling' car.
Get some springs and 'T' bars from a later (heavier) V8 car. I had '68 383 springs and a rear bar (Quickor) plus a added bar in the front
on a '65 GT...it really handled well. All bolt in/on.

good luck to you bbscamp, if you find an extra gas pedal cable setup please let me know!
