I sell a lot of stuff on craigslist, and every time I post something I get around 5 or 6 of these emails. Ah, those wacky Nigerians and their hijinks.....

Ahhhh yes.....A guy tried to do that with a dirtbike I had on Ebay. The bike was $1,700 and he sends me a money order for $3,400. The auction didn't even end yet. He says to cash the MO and just give him the rest in cash and he'll have someone pick up the bike. I bring the MO to my bank so they can check it out and they can't find the bank it's drawn on anywhere. He says he was in Belgium, the MO was from Florida and the postage was from California. Yup.....scam. When I told him to forget it he got pissy and threatened me. I just told him my real name, Detective Timothy Corriea of the New Bedford Police precinct 3 and that I was going to send the MO to the authorities in Boston. I never heard back from him AND I still have the MO. He never asked for it back.

This is a very common scam. They send you a very AUTHENTIC counterfeit money order. (even for 12 grand-remember the best scam leaves the VICTIM thinking that HE is really getting over on the scammer!). You put it in your bank account and many times the BANK TAKES IT! You then pay out your cash to the "shipper" and if you are VERY unlucky, give them the CAR! (They are actually just fishing for your "shipping" cash). After a couple of weeks, your bank discovers that the money order is fake and they take the money back out of your account, leaving you DOUBLE SCREWED!!! Be careful.

One time some knucklehead came to my shop with 27" color tv's. All the guys lined up to buy them. I immediately started ripping open one of the boxes and it had two cinder blocks in it. Only the box he had open had a tv in it. As soon as I busted him, 8 guys all went from standing in line to hand him cash to busting him up. It was great to catch one of these guys.

I emailed several people on cragslist about cars they had for sale. I got that one around 5x's so far. Usually there is a link that takes you to some kinda ebay looking page. Funny part is that the ebay fraud link is usually legit. I have reported these bogus listing several time and got an email from ebay saying it is being investigated.

My next door neighbor came knocking on my door a couple of weeks ago. He knew that I make a living on EBAY and he wanted to ask me some questions. He told me that he had found a great deal on a Delorean overseas on EBAY for only $4k including shipping. He was on the way to Western Union to send the money, but before he left, he double-checked the auction and EBAY had pulled it! He was VERY upset that they had ended the auction (those bastards) and the seller had assured him by email that the car was still available and that the cancellation was just a misunderstanding! I told him how lucky he was that EBAY HAD pulled the auction and explained the current scams to him! By the way, do not EVER EVER pay for an item with Western Union money transfer or by sending cash! The scams KEEP getting better! They have almost gotten ME a couple of times. There are basically two types or scams: #1. Phishing Scams (Designed to steal your Ebay/Paypal account info:) I get two or three VERY authentic looking emails every day saying "Your account will be terminated", Someone has accessed your Paypal account", "We need to reset your Paypal (or EBAY) password" or: "Congratulations, you have just bought a Caterpillar diesel engine for $8000"! Other effective versions say: "I still haven't gotten the item you sent me! I'm gonna turn you in to EBAY!", "This is to inform you that your account is being suspended due to shill bidding" ,"Thanks for the $2200 Paypal payment on this snowmobile engine, we'll send it out immediately!" All of these scams have one thing in common: there is a link for you to click on for more info (It ALWAYS looks official) and you are ALWAYS directed to enter your password and info! As soon as you do that, THEY HAVE YOUR ACCOUNT INFO!! If you DO fall for one of these scams CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD IMMEDIATELY! Forward ANY suspicious EBAY or Paypal emails to spoof@ebay.com and they will tell you if they are real. Finally, the quickest way to tell if an email is fake is to ignore it (do not click ANY link in it) and go to your "my EBAY" section and click on "Messages". All authentic EBAY and Paypal emails are copied in the "message" file and scam emails generally cannot get into that internal file. #2 Fake Auctions Listed with stolen accountsIf someone DOES get your account info, they can immediately change your password (locking YOU out) and list scam auctions (Like the $9500 Buy it Now Hemi Challenger or Cuda Convertibles that you see all the time). These are particularly effective if your account has perfect feedback. A DEAD GIVEAWAY on those scams is the line "My email doesn't work (or is slow) Please contact me at THIS email" Usually even the PICTURE of the car is stolen from somewhere else. All they need to do is convince a novice buyer to wire money to a foreign address (usually where US law has no jurisdiction) and that person is an instant victim. I might add that, in many cases, the scammed buyer comes looking for YOU, because yours is the only seller info available to him! I once looked at a scam Hemi Challenger Convertible auction where the seller had posted the questions he received in the Q&A: It's truly unfortunate how gullible some people are! Imagine a rotisserie restored Hemi E body convertible with a BIN of $9500! There were questions like "I am VERY interested in this car but I do not have all the money. Can you take less?" And "Is anything wrong with this car? Is it drivable on the street?" If it wasn't so blatent, it would have been comical. Please be careful on EBAY. Honest professional vendors have a vested interest in keeping the service safe. Every victim of an EBAY scam is a lost customer for my colleagues and me. I hope this info helps somewhat. If you want to post it permanently somewhere, I'll be happy to answer individual questions anytime.

A friend tried to sell his 94 indy pace car mustang with 6 miles on it. He got the fake money order and the bank even cleared it 6 days later. The guy sent more money asking him to pay the shipper (England) and ship the car when the cheack cleared. It got awfully close because of the bank having thier head up thier teller window. But he didnt ship or pay. Even if the bank says its clear go there and make damn sure.!!! Ebay should have some responeabilitys for this crap.

i usually am pretty savvy at spotting ebay scams and I report about 5-10 fake autions or scams a week, but they got me good once. I was looking at an auction for a Dart, when I clicked on the link, it came up with an authentic looking ebay login screen saying that I need to login to view this auction, without thinking I typed in my account name and password and hit login. Fortunately it only took me a couple of seconds to realize what had just happened, "I WAS PHISHED!" And they got my ebay and Paypal password. I immediately went to every online account I had and changed my passwords, within 60 seconds my ebay and Paypal were changed. I got lucky, most people would never have even know anything was wrong. The only real secure way to avoid this is to ALWAYS go to your "MY EBAY" page first, login there, then go look at auctions, unless your are lookiing at adult listings, you will not be asked to login again within 24 hours unless you logout.
