vibration problems 64 dart
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:32:03 PM »

I have a 64 dodge dart and I just put a 360/904   8 3/4    combo  When I get on the freeway the car starts vibrating really bad at 3000 rpm all the way to 3700 rpm and then it just goes away and I can cruise along fine but then if I dip down to like 3000 again it will start vibrating then I have to take it back up to about 4000 rpm again for the vibration to go away.  I tried throwing it in neutral while it was vibrating and it didn't help it at all.  When I first put the thing together the tranny was fine but I think it vibrated so much that it messed up the front pump seal on the tranny and now it leaks tranny fluid real bad.

the driveshaft hasn't been balanced  ,   the yoke sticks out of the tranny about 2 in.     ,      the pinion angle on the rearend is like 5 degree's up I think if I remember correctly  ,   It has a good tranny mount and there is no contact from tranny to crossmember or underbody

what do you guys think would fix it?  has anyone ever experienced this before?

yes I am positive that I am running the right torque converter it has weights on it for the 360 and the balancer is correct too.

if it was the engine out of ballance it would happen at a stand still at the rpm you mention.

it sounds like the driveshaft is bent or the wheels and rubber are out of ballance.

With the DS hanging out so far, that could wreck the bushing on the tailshaft.
Running the DS out of balance will wreck the pinion bushing.

so do you think that the driveshaft being out of balance messed up the pinion bushing and lead to the front seal failure too.

I think your right about the tailshaft bushing too it drips a little from there also.....

also does anyone know some website about how to rebuild 904 trannies and I've seen books on how to rebuild 727 will that work for the 904 also or is it completely different?

You say highway and 3000-3700 RPM. Does it vibrate at those RPM when setting still? If yes....engine if NO if may be wheel balance problems.....maybe.

I had the same problem a few years back, would only vibrate  at certain rpm's had a new driveshaft made balanced, still had the same problem. Usually a tire or wheel vibr. u can feel through the steering wheel , or the seat of your pants if its a rear tire. My vibration would shake the hole car, rattle the dash etc. When i changed from sb to bb it took my convertor to trans shop to have it looked at , there was a guy who knew mopars working there and he knew right away what my prob was. It was a 360 conv. not a 318. I ran my bb with the same drive shaft ,rear, tires, and never had another prob. Double check that convertor, it is poss. for them to damage front seals.   J.R.
