How do I make a small radius cut in sheet metal?
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:25:43 AM »

Hey All,

In order to install my new radiator I have to make two small cuts in my core support. The new radiator has the trans cooling lines coming from the bottom of the tank vs. the back side of the tank where they were originally located. So to get the rad 1/4 inch lower so it will reach the original mounting points on the core suppt, I have to cut two holes in the sheet metal to let the cooling lines hang a bit lower.

If I am going to cut here I want it to look as nice as possible. I know others won't see it, but I know it is there!! Tongue So I need to make two small radius cuts (white arrows below) and I am not quite sure what tool to use. Could it be as simple as using a hole saw? Do they make hole saws for cutting metal? Or is there some other way that I am not thinking of?

Thanks for any ideas,

Chris

Yup, use a hole saw for the radius and then cut the straits last, JMHO Jeff.

use the proper size drill bit to achieve the radius you want in each corner first.then just use a die grinder on the rest.

Jeff,

Is there a metal type of hole saw I need or can I get away with using the ones for wood?

Thanks!

Get ahold of a metal punch. Most electricians have access to one. Then use a cutoff wheel if you really need the rest of it opened up.

Punches rule. They're the way to go. And yes, there are metal holesaws.
