Hood scoop?
« on: April 07, 2007, 06:08:02 PM »

Hey guys. Our '72 Demon has the "snorkel" scoop installed on it, and we'd like to cut the hood to make the scoop functional. However, we haven't been able to figure out how/where to place the hole/holes in the hood. Does anyone know where I can get a template or some good directions for accurately and correctly cutting the hood to accommodate it? Below is a picture of the car with the scoop in question.

Thanks in advance!
-Josh

Thats a good idea, and I actually might do that with my 'Cuda, but we want to make sure the scoop is of the correct dimensions, shape, and location for this car.

That scoop had two holes in the factory hoods. They were placed near the rear of the scoops. If you have the factory bracing, it's easy to see where they go.

I started the other thread about hood scoops. If you look under the hood, you'll see the notched area for hole to be made cut out, half moon in frame part. I have called that place about hood scoops also, never and answer when I call and they are closed Fridays? Just my luck. Of course there is a time difference between myself and them also I realize. Hope they answer next week.

I'm the one who posted the two hood pictures on the other thread.
Here they are again and if you want them in a larger size, let me know and I'll e-mail them to you.

Hi Mark,

When I read your comment about all of the hoods having the 'half moon" cut outs in the underhood bracing by the factory, I went out and looked at my son's 1972 Dart Swinger, which has all of it's original sheetmetal and a non factory scooped hood and I did see the factory markings for the holes needed for the separate twin hood scoops, but no markings for the later version of the center mounted "snorkel scoop that Josh is working with. I then went to my factory 1972 factory parts book and found the following part numbers for hoods for 1972 Darts and Demons. One of the hoods must be for the separate twin scoops and the other must be for the center mounted snorkel scoop.  Dunno

with out hood scoops, cars built up to Dec 1971, part #3611271
with out hood scoops, cars built after Dec 1971, part #3611665
with hood scoops, cars built up to Dec 1971, part #3611266

Josh,

Year One sells the rubber seals that you will need after you cut the holes in your Demon's hood. Part #HS58. These seals should also give you the diameter of the holes that you need to cut, to make it look like the factory set up. I believe that the two holes were 4 inches in diameter each. You can contact Year One at www.yearone.com or if you have questions, you can call them at 1-800-932-7663

Glad to help Josh. The one thing that I haven't figgured out yet on this style scoop is, are these two rubber seals the only parts used to keep water out of the engine compartment? It's kind of  Frustrated because in my 72 parts book, it only shows the normal flat hood in the exploded picture of the hood, but under section 15-03-52, it list the following part for the Dart / Demon only.  "Baffle, air scoop, water, sports hood, quanity needed per car is two. Part #2998881. So, is this set of water baffles meant for use on the separate twin scoops, or the center mounted snorkel scoop, or both style scoops?  Frustrated Frustrated It's things like this that gives me gray hair and I DON'T need any help in that area!  \/][ Roll Eyes

Can any of you folks with FACTORY mounted A-Body scoopps help us out on this question please? If not, Josh and his father are going to be VERY upset the first time it rains, or they wash the car and flood the engine bay with water!  explode Madd Frustrated Frustrated

i know the dual seperate scoops used them, but i was never exactly sure why they were there.
now i know, thanks.i would guess the snorkel used them too since the holes are the same size.

So the holes are the same size? 4" dia.? I'd assume they both used the rubber grommet/seal things if they're the same dimensions. It would really help if I could just see one of the darn things in person... I tried looking when I was at MATS but either A) nobody that I saw ran that scoop with the factory holes or B) they had their hood down.  Frustrated

The pictures of the NOS hood that I posted, are of a hood that was for sale on ebay awhile back. As far as the hole size for the center mounted snorkel scoop, I do believe that they are 4" in diameter, and are the same size as the ones used on the separate twin scoops, but I would buy the seals first, so you can get a measurement from them first, BEFORE you cut the hood.  Wink As far as the water baffles that I mentioned above goes, I believe that they are additional parts needed along with the rubber seals.   Dunno

i have the seals if you need measurements,
just the nature of the design of the seals would keep the water out if it was rolling up the hood,it has a lip that sits on top of the hood.
i figured they were mostly for looks, but put em in so i could connect a ram air easier.

Richard, I bought the Year One seals and installed them with my opened up 'cuda scoops.  The hole size is 4 inches and I used a hole saw to cut mine.  The only question I have is which way they are supposed to face.  I thought the tall lip was supposed to point down towards the engine, but they would keep out water better the other way.  I have some pics at home if anyone wants to see them.

Hi Dave,

I would put the tall side up to keep the water out, as it looks like on the A-Body cars, these two seals are the only parts involved to keep the unwanted H2O out of the engine compartment. Were the Year One parts well made?

Pictures would be GREAT for me and I'm POSITIVE that Josh and his dad would appreciate them also!  Wink Grin thank you thank you

Here's one pic of the underside with the seals in place.  The seals are very good quality...they should be for the price they want!  I originally installed them with the wide lip down as I didn't want the lip to stick up too far inside the scoop.  I may try switching them around.  They just slip into place over the edge of the sheetmetal.

Thanks for the picture Dave. The Year One on-line web price for these hood scoop seals when I checked them yesterday, was $51.00. Is that about what you paid for them?

That sounds right Richard.  They get even more expensive when you have to ship them across the border and pay exchange, duty and brokerage charges.   hammer
