Shooting my fiberglass hood
« on: April 09, 2007, 07:16:36 PM »

So I picked up my paint and flattener today. You guys that have shot AAR hoods, you just scuffed it and shot it right? I don't need to put and primer on it or anything do I?

I always prime and block sand out anything that gets painted, fiberglass or not.  There will be defects that you cannot see until you paint it, trust me the primer is a necessary and useful step, unless you want to do it twice ....

Yeah, the AAR hood is a beautiful piece but it's not perfect. I just gone done spaying mine with surfacer after I filled a couple spots where the emblems go (70 Duster), and the forward edge of the scoop. Then again, if you don't care....

It doesn't need any filler anywhere that I can see. It's more of an adhesion issue I'm concerned about.

Well it has a real nice gelcoat surface to it. I've heard you can just scuff and shoot it.

I have some sealer left from when I did the engine bay. It wouldn't have to be anything fiberglass specific would it?

You must scuff the surface for any primer or paint to adhere to. Because the paint will be of the flat color, I highly suggest scuffing with a wet 600 grit paper. It will give you literally no scratch lines and enough scuff for the topcoat to adhere. Alos, You should use a primer 1st before you lay on the topcaot of flat color, the flat will need the primer to bond.

Wait, Am I supposed to mix the sealer in with the primer, or shoot it after I lay the primer?

lars.........just scuff the hood with like 400 grit,  320 is too rough, 600 may not be course enough. put on the sealer. let it dry for a bit. and paint it.

im not a big fan of wet on wet applications, although it usually works out fine..........IF your finished product looks a little funky; let it dry a day or so, wet sand it with 400 and respray it. sometimes things need to be painted twice to look rite.

$631 not counting the gas I burned driving to the terminal to pick it up.

I guess I should have known better then to start a thread asking this question. It's the same as asking "what kind of ice cream tastes best".

the problem is there are sooooo many variables in paint work... it seems like every job is unique....different brands, different products, temperature and humidity, how much is or isnt applied, dry times........you get the idea........experienced guys find a way that dont bite em in the ass and they stick with it  Cool

One thing no one addressed is ..........when starting a paint job, whether it be the primer coat or finish..........always stick with the brand you start with!!! FYI....if you start with using Dupont primer, then use all of their products, thinner, sealer, primer and finish coat etc. If you stary and use Dupont primer and then go to say House of Kolor , what can happen is one brand may not like the other down the road. You will not see any problems right away, but get the car done and go to your 1 show, have the car sit in the sun all day, that's when things will happen. Like I said, it won't happen over nite, but eventually the paint will do funny stuff , like hairline cracking, spiderwebbing, etc. Had a friend bring me his car to do over after what I just said happened. BEWARE N BE CAREFUL!!!

Yeah I buy all my stuff from the same place, they always give me the same brands.

This may sound like a stupid question, but should I do anything to the underside of the hood?

Thats cool, you are so lucky to have a place to work on your car. I would be painting my Dart myself, but my apartment complex would not be too happy. Even though I have a compressor, welder, and a ton of tools in my garage, painting my car would be pushing it too far! Its funny that I have everything I need to paint my car except my own garage.

Doing the underneath of the hood is your call. If you are doing it in the semi-flat that you are doing the hood, do the underneath the same. Like the guy said, if you can hang it, good, if not,and you have to lay it flat, paint the underneath 1st. The next day turn it over and do the topside. If you get a tiny scatch on the under, its not a problem to touch up.
