How bad is it really? I cannot tell if it is mostly just the filler they used from the factory or if it mostly metal...

Factory filler. Don't worry, my 73 is way worse.

Will it be pretty simple to fix? And my simple I mean not having to replace all kinds of metal. My welding skills are sad.

Is there rust through? If not just sand it down, paint on some rust converter, then cover it with filler and paint over it.

Nope, no rust through. What you see is what you get. The drivers side is much worse than the passenger. My brother owns and runs his own body shop and he uses this green stuff as filler and then sands it smooth, is that what I need to use? This could be done in one day or so, right?

Well, you don't want to assume there's no rust-through because on the surface, rustg can be deceiving. I'd remove the old filler/lead and grind away the surface rust. If you're left with sound metal everywhere, then that's good. Vinyl top going to go back on it? Wouldn't hurt to mig weld the seam solid then fill with something like All-Metal. That could be topped with the green stuff and sealed with a coat of epoxy. Could be done in a day or so.

Definitely not putting the vinyl top back on. I just want to clean up the rust as much as possible and if I have to replace the metal then oh well I guess I will just go that route. What do I use to grind/sand the old filler to get to the metal?

Since I know how much everyone likes pictures I thought I would update with my little cover up. My brother is going to fix it completely before paint, I just couldn't stand the rust and flaking and peeling... [attachment deleted by admin]

looks good to me. Don't worry so much. If you want it bad enough you'll make it work. I wonder if you went and lightly tapped on the metal if you could see if it's thin with say rust on the back of the metal.

That is a beautiful site to me! The Super Bee we just got is terminal at the roof seam, I mean gone. We have had to buy a new roof from a donor Coronet. So, count your blessings, you are in good shape! Good luck!

So, count your blessings, you are in good shape! Good luck! I think it was Norwaycharger who posted a splice job he did on a Dart that used that seam as the rear grafting point. It was a thing of beauty. Front half to back half. He may have a gallery on the board or the post might still be alive.
