im looking into converting my 5x4" bolt pattern on the rear of my duster to 5x4.5 it has a 8 3/4 in it and due to rust up here in minnesota the junk yards i have found dont have old mopars in. looking to get everything from the parts store, now i know i need axles but could i just buy the drums/shoes? i believe that my brakes are 10" would a 10" drum and rotor work off of say a 68 RR with the 8 3/4 rear and swap over all of my hardware ?? if that would not work what would i need to get?

It is possible that the 10x2" setup will work with your backing plates, but I don't know for sure. Certainly anything wider than that won't fit. There were some Dakota (early five lug) rear brakes that would fit and last I heard thebacking plates were still available from Chrysler.

Backing plates are not only diameter specific, but they are shoe width specific, too. All parts need to match from the same vehicle or you might wind up with problems. I don't know what year Dakotas.

I haven't looked at a Year One catalog in a long time, but you can bet if they have it, somebody else does for a lot less. I wouldn't be able to tell by looking. What I always do is pull a complete set off at the wrecking yard after checking the drums. That way you have a matched set.

8-1/4 brakes fit fine, but the axles come out differently (c-clips).

I'm using an original a-body width 8 3/4 with A/M Yukon axles(be careful if u use them)...I went to a junkie and picked up a complete 8 1/4 off an 85 New Yorker and bolted everything up to make sure it fits, then I'm buying all new parts for that car locally and bolting them up...fit is fine(backingplates are a dealer-only item though)...all told, it'll cost me less than $400 Ca.

I used Cordoba rear brakes on mine. Like was said just unbolt everthing for the housing end out. For the front you can use b-body spindles and upper control arms. I did this and used the 10" drums from a RR. Jim

If it were me, I'd drill out the axles and get new drums.

No, a-body cars (and some Imperials) are the only cars that would be different. Any rear drive B/C/E/F/M/J-body will work (Late Lebaron coupe/convert were also called J-bodies, hence the rear drive remark).

Here's where you get into problems: If you DRILL OUT A body axles you have to use A body backing plates and drill out A body drums (or else get/make some sort of a spacer).
The a body axles have a 1/4 inch offset difference and the B/C/E body backing plates and drums will hit if you use them.
Just remember+ A body axles=A body drums/backing plates.
Cut down axles or aftermarket=use just about any backing plates.
Good Luck!
