Windshield gasket?
« on: April 25, 2007, 11:01:02 AM »

Can a windshield gasket be reused?  I have a cracked windshield that I need to take out.  Is there an easy way to take it out without destroying the gasket?  THANKS

I would'nt cheap out on a $100 part, even if it could be saved you would spend more time than it's worth trying to pull it out carefully and cleaning it.
It's too hard to go back and fix if it goes wrong.

those gaskets are very strong. i sandblast them and they look like new and are nice and flexible again. done it many times and would never buy new.  doug

Has anyone else successfully reused a windshield gasket?  How did you get the widshield out without damaging the gasket?

If your glass is good cut the gasket, If the glass is broken or cracked and will be replaced, Thats where you learn how to get the gasket off and re use it.

See, thats what I've got.  I have a windshield that has a crack in it.  Plus I need to take it out to take the dash out.  I just didn't want bust up the windshield just to save the gasket.  If that's the case, I'll just cut the gasket and buy a new one and avoid cleaing up all the shattered glass.

The windshield won't shatter, it will just keep cracken....but if you undo the outside of the gasket at the seem , lube it up ,push from the inside and work the glass out, using a plastic stick or wooden paint stick around the gasket you will see how it works ,without breaking a new windshield.

                                Now is when you learn,

Get someone that knows what they are doing. My body man took my both windshields out front / back. Did not break the glass or damage the gasket . Did not take very long.
