The internet is the death of spelling and grammar.
« on: April 29, 2007, 12:58:47 AM »

Yes, it's true. I realize that there have always been those with third-grade grammar and spelling skills, but since the advent of the internet (and texting), it seems to be fashionable to butcher the English language, decent grammar, and spelling. Car guys are certainly no exception. I've had a few beers, and it's loosened my tongue (and fingers  Wink )

Allow me to vent my frustrations with the aforementioned destroyers of society:

  • "u" and "ur" - unless you are under 16, you have no business using these.
  • There, their, and they're. Learn the difference.
  • Cars don't have yolks. However, driveshafts do have yokes.
  • There is no 't' in Dexron.
  • Cars have brakes, not breaks. I suppose you could 'break' your 'brakes'.  Grin
  • It's really annoying....when people misuse '...'....never end a sentence....just keeps going....no punctuation....you don't talk this way....why would you write this way....
  • You do not use apostrophe's after any and all word's that end with an 's.  (sarcasm intended)

I just know I've missed a few...feel free to add them!  Cheers

End rant. Don't we all feel better now?  hammer

I feel better cause I feel the exact same way!  No matter how dorky it may seem.  Of course, I love to use "..." behind my sentences as needed.

The most annoying grammatical error is the use of "your" instead of "you're" which is the abbreviation for you ARE.

The incorrect (and often used) usage would be : "YOUR right, the internet is killing our grammar!"
Obviously it should be: "You're right, the internet is killing our grammar!"

That's the most common grammatical mistake on the net. I've also seen it on professionally created web pages!

I've had a problem for years with cars "running good" when they actually "run well", but that is a mistake that's so common it's almost accepted!

Finally (and I once wrote CNN about THIS one): There is NO SUCH WORD as "normalcy" (even though every newscaster, public official, and even our president has used it.) The correct term is NORMALITY.

Oh, and for Mopar guys: The correct spelling for the B body Plymouth with the "beep beep" horn is : "road runner". Two words and never capitialized. Just a bit of trivia.

Just a few of MY observations.

Greg, I have a question...I was told that when using quotation marks at the end of a sentence, the last quotation mark should be placed after the period ending the sentence.

For example, using your trivia point above, it should be:  "road runner."      and not:  "road runner".

Personally I feel more comfortable writing it the same way you did, but I was called on it on another board by some pedantic English Major type.

What do you think..?

I would put the period after the closing quotation mark, as you're not quoting the period.

Greg,

While I will agree that "Road Runner" should always be written as two words, I will disagree with you that it should NEVER be capitialized. The cars name is based on the Warner Brothers character, which is therefore considered a proper name, just as your name is. Proper names should always be capitialized. To verifiy this, as far as Chryslers use of this name, I double checked five or six different Chrysler publications and they ALL have both words capitialized, just as "Charger," "Dart" and any other name that they had for their vehicles when used in a written publication. It IS funny though, as the name plates used on the actual cars, does NOT use capitialized letters on each word!  Roll Eyes \/][

Yeah, Roach, that makes sense to me too, but check this out:

First, I'm a teacher.

Second, I don't teach English, so I am fairly tolerant but even I have moments when I go ARRRGHH!!

If you really want to ruin you spelling and grammar ability grade a few hundred essays by middle school students.  My wife refuses to help me grade papers any more.

That being said most of the post on Big Block Dart are pretty good, only occasionally do I pull my hair out. The most frequent errors and most frustrating errors are errors of omission.  The writer frequently assumes too much knowledge on the part of the reader.  For example, I'll see a question that in my humble opinion requires a rather lengthy discussion and yet the first five responses are a single incomplete sentence in length.  The other issue is the writer who makes a stupid typing mistake, misspelling dexron as dextron doesn't annoy me as much as when two letters are transposed in a word.  It annoys me for the same reason that errors annoy any reader, it interrupts the flow of the reader.  When this happens the brain basically stops decoding and making meaning from the writing and has to try to figure out the word.  Once the word is figured out the previous sentence has to be re-read in order for the meaning to be established.  In effect the reader is frustrated.

Interestingly before I posted this I ran spell check and it found three errors in spelling.  Most web browsers now incorporate a spell checker.  If your spelling is as bad as mine it might be a good idea to use it.

...in all honesty...i write the way i Fu*&*ng please......i do it on purpose..[most people in the world have become plenty drab.. creativity should never be discouraged in any varying form....if your mind can't compute , gets frustrated or annoyed from lack of capital letters..or coma's etc...then you have a lot more serious issues to deal with..... THEIR ARE NO LAWS IN COMMUNICATING.....if your that anal retentive and can't comprehend what's being transcribed...it's not my fault it happens to be your own unwillingness to expand the creative barrier.....i do agree on the aspect of misspelled words[i misspell lots.i learned more french then i did english]...but i also don't always have the time to spell check every sentence,,....plus if someone just needs a quick answer i feel that a short sentence might be all it takes to resolve a dilema[which is more what this site's about].......plus again i don't always have time to write down a full lengtly explanation of every single detail.....if you need that much explanation...open a book and read[like i did]......on how something is suppose to be done...anyways i kinda hope some people do get annoyed by how i write.....[it's your own loss, not mine]
