ya know whats funny. i've worked in the getto befor and ive met some black people that spoke very proper english and they got made fun of for it because every one thought that they were trying to be "white" and also because they thought that he thought (kinda confusing) he was better then them because he spoke english the right way with out all the slang- he also wrote proper too with all the puctuation...   what a messed up world..   when did how some one speak or write make them any differant of a person people get made fun of for not speaking or wrighting proper and then at the same time people get made fun of for speaking and wrighting proper..

my mom is a special ed ?( i dont know if thats politacly correct any more) teacher and i have met kids that are 12 and 13 that know more about cars then i do even after my schooling and working in the feild and they cant wright a paragragh and make it make scence. and the sad part is that the kids would make a better mechanic then me but they will never get the chance because the buissnes world is to worryed about how there resume is spelled then how well they can do the job. or how hard they will work. i think that they shouldnt look at spelling when it comes to jobs because of that. sure the person that can wright good will get the job because they know how to make it look like they really know what they are doing on paper when all they know how to do is use a computer.

but i guess i have no problem that like to use proper wrigting its your choise to do so

Well, I am sure that there are exceptional cases where someone can be an intuitive super mechanic, much as there are instances where born genius musicians can compose symphonies and yet cannot read a note of sheet music...

However the fact is that most mechanics know their way reading a tech manual, and that most professional musicians know how to read music notes.

The reason for that is that it is simply much easier to get the job done that way for the vast majority of the people who were not lucky enough to be born prodigies at their chosen field of work...

It's just the way the world works.

For better or for worse, we are all judged every day by how we dress, how we speak and perhaps somewhat less often, by how we write.

The good part about this is that these factors are some of the few given to us where we can improve ourselves by virtue of our own work...

No matter what you choose to do for a living, I believe that you will progress farther in your career if you dress the part, speak the part and yes, even write the part.

Again, this may or may not be fair, but I think that it is the way it works (most of the time, at least...You may luck out and get to marry the boss' daughter and yet not be able to spell her name, but unless you are talented enough that you can lick your own eyebrows, you can't really count on that marriage thing)

Anyhow, that's my opinion, based on my own experiences as a previously non-English speaking immigrant to the USA.

YMMV - (Your Mileage May Vary)

Well, again I'll disagree... Smiley

I do not believe that a formal (classical) education and creative thinking are mutually exclusive. In fact, I think that the converse is more often closer to the truth.

I have no idea how writing correctly intereferes with creative thinking/writing.  We write correctly so that people can accurately understand what we are saying without having to hear the words spoken from our mouthes.  Hence the use of commas and periods.
Let's say you had a neighbor who was an english major and he didn't have the money to repair his car at a shop so he tried doing it himself.  You go over there and watch him and he's using  channel locks to try and take off a bolt.  Do you let him continue to do this or do you hand him a socket and a wrench?  Maybe he's just trying to be creative? He might get the job done eventually, but wouldn't it just be easier to use the right size socket or open-end?
Words are the tools of communication, using them right just as you would a shop tool, makes life a whole lot easier and get's the job done smoothly.  Putting your hands over your ears when someone tries handing you the right tool doesn't make much sense to me.

This may not apply to your channel-lock analogy, but perhaps they are using the right tool or, at least, the most efficient one. Maybe the "internet language" is the ratchet and the rest of us are still using wrenches. They both accomplish the same goal, do they not?

I'm not following.
EDIT: Nevermind, I just saw where you said, "the internet language."
If you mean that using "ur" instead of "you're," or "your," is more efficient then I would have to disagree.  Maybe it gets the job done faster in regards to typing it out but obviously you see that using "ur" can be mis-interpreted between the two forms.  Therefore, the job of communication is not getting done as well as it should be.  Sure, we can guess which form the person means but there's a difference between the two words for a reason.
I don't see how typing is any different than writing and why the internet should have any effect on the english language.  We use shortcuts more often on the internet because most of the time we are speaking very casually.  However, speaking like that is only dumbing yourself down because you start thinking that using such shortcuts are acceptable all the time.

I can never remember lying or laying. I know one is for objects and one is for living things.  I spent the day lying on the couch, while the remote was laying on the floor? Or did the remote spend the day lying on the floor? Or was I laying on the couch?

I have to admit, I'm obsessive about grammar. Other people's writings don't bother me, in fact sometimes it can be fun to read it. But when I write something, I sometimes read over it a hundred times to make sure the grammar is correct.  It takes me an hour to send a text message LOL  When I was younger, before the days of message boards, I spent 1000's of hours on IRC - internet relay chat. I ever spelled out a whole word on there. I thought it was pretty cool to write out a whole sentence with 8 letters. But now, I can't shorten anything - maybe a bit obsessive-compulsive I know, but I am what I am Smiley

I'd never short-change anyone for grammar on here - it's the cars we're talking about, so that's where my mind is. But it's good to know when, and when not to use it.
My whole thought on everything in life is that whenever you take a shortcut, you'll end up further behind - cut corners on your car, and it haunts you later. Cut corners at work, you end up out of work. Cut corners in your writing, the meaning is soon forgotten. It's like any other type of slang - use it when it's convenient and the meaning is simple.
At the bar, it aint too big a deal how what gets said, but when I have to appear before the township zoning board, or the director of the local bank, it is of the utmost importance to properly convey the needs and accomplishments of the corporation, in order to instill sufficient confidence with the audience, so that they will make the necessary approvals to ensure your ongoing growth, success and profitability.

Sometimes the adjustable wrench works fine, other times you need the whole toolbox. hainit or no? Grin

Well...since we're talking about grammar...It now has another tool to make what we're saying mean what we're saying and bring some emotion into our words...Hence was born the emoticon.... Cheers...These little devils  Evil have helped to add some feeling to our writing, and to the person that invented them a big hurra... Cheers...For a long time things could be interpreted in different ways by people and the whole point of an internet conversation could come across in the wrong way...Example...I'm just trying to tell you how I feel... Embarrassed...Meaning (your embarassed)...or I'm just trying to tell you how I feel... Madd...(Your mad)...Or I'm just trying to tell you how I feel... Kiss...(You love someone)...Or I'm just trying to tell you how I feel.... moon...(Kiss my ass)...Or I'm just trying to tell you how I feel.... \/][...(Damn, your so dumb)....

I love these little guys.... Popcorn

It's been so long since I've been in school that I've forgotten the rules on comas, apostrophies(DANG, that took a long time ta figur out thatn'),etc.(see I don't even know how to spell that one!).Now just for the sake of gaining more knowledge, how should that sentance have ended?
Yes I've forgotten the rules to paragraph, too!I guess writing & speaking properly is something you make your own choice to do.My Mom learned English on her own w/Dads help, from newspapers & reading the dictionary. She came over from Italy after the War w/Dad,she did it because she wanted to & in a way was forced into it by society in general. What DOES IRRIATATE ME TO NO END is someone coming into the shop, and this isn't a slam to Hispanics either, that can barely speak English, then look @ ME like I'M a moron for not understanding them.I'm pretty good @ kind of listening through accents, because like I said,my Mom was Italian, but there are limits.I've worked w/ guys before that have a hard time figuring out how to put something down into words, but I'll put them up against ANY techs out there as far as fixing a car!
Sometimes, you also have to consider that maybe fingers get crossed up on the keyboard & letters come out bas ackwards & the author did'nt catch it before posting.ME,I've just plain out forgotten some of the spelling & puntuation rules!I'd rather read an article on drivability diags & concentrate on how to do the job instead of why it was written that way.

Personally, I'm not judging anyone and I really don't think anyone is (as far as spelling and grammar).  I'm just trying to point out, that although many of us don't rely on writing perfect for our occupation, it is, nevertheless important.  It never hurts to brush up on old skills.

There are better examples of ghost riding on MTV and YouTube, I doubt my avatar would have much of an impact.  Not to mention, if the kid is dumb enough to ghost ride, then who cares what happens to him/her? They serve as great entertainment though.

If a socket stripped the bolt, something tells me he's not going to have much more success using channel locks.
