Rear spring sizes. So no one is running these springs?
« on: May 15, 2007, 09:11:52 PM »

What rear springs are you guys running on the street ??I have .920 bars for the front .It will be a auto street car. Will the SS springs be too much?Or should I go with the XHD springs ?What about the car sitting higher on one side with the SS springs. If it's a street car is it the driverside that I get two of or the passenger ?? And how bad is this if you look at Toms car the picture from the rear It certainally doesn't look like it is sitting higher on the pass side. What did you do there Tom ?? What do you guys think??

Thanks !
Blair

So maybe I can ask this differently Can I put two driverside ( or maybe passanger side)SS springs under the car to get it to sit level?Or where its a street car maybe just the XHD will be good enough?? I just don't want it to ride like a truck with the SS springs and I really don't like the idea of it sitting higher on one side or the other. So back to my original question if anyone has these springs how are they performing in your setup?

I've always wondered if anyone has ever used two left or right SS springs as a pair.

Wouldnt that kind of defeat the purpose of running S/S springs?

Not for a car built for handling.

i have the 2800 lb type in my valiant.

i never noticed any leaning to one side, maybe it did but i would have adjusted a torsion bar.

Competition SS leafs were designed for 1 purpose only.....going straight.........use the XHDs on the street.......FYI all chrysler products were designed to sit higher on the rt side to allow for the crown of the road............kim.........

I'm running the 2800#, the car sits level from side to side. Raised the rear about 2" and the ride is nice.

My passenger side sits 5/8" higher than the drivers side and I have 890 T bars with 002 / 003 springs. I also have the XHD springs on my RR and it sits 1/2" higher on the passenger side. I am nit picky but this is an area that doesn't bother me. Level the rear of the car out by mashing the pedal to the floor.

5/8 not very much then is it .I know why but it's just that it sitting higher on one side would bother me like a misaligned door ,hood or fender .Have you driven yours enough yet to determine the ride?

Thanks!

No I'm still trying to get the engine together. The Road Runner hasn't settled in two years but I don't drive it much. And as for the Dart / RR, it really isn't noticeable unless you are looking for it.

my mancini XHD springs made my dart sit crooked, a difference of over 1 inch per side.  I used a one inch lowering block on just the passenger side to level it out, and made an extension for my shock to compensate for the shock studs being positioned farther apart.

Now that's a lot ! So then back to my original question .Instead of a lowering block and a shock extension wouldn't it have been easier to level the car with two driverside SS springs ??Especially if you aren't going to race it ?

If you arent going to race it use stock replacement springs and clamp the front sections to reduce spring wrap.

These guys will custom make you a set with how much drop you want in them for around $459. Steve Strope uses them on some of his Mopars.

I don't want drop I want a good ride and look and am just trying to figure out what to order .I can get the SS springs for 250cnd and the XHD for 220cnd from the dealer which is a heck of  a lot cheaper than I can get anything shipped in for and I just go to the dealer and pick up!

you can't see that it's not level while you're driving, and even if you get it to sit perfectly level, what do you think will happen when you get into it? hammer.  i like what b569rr said, if any ford or chevy drivers tell you your car isn't level, it just means they're behind you 4 speed

if you are going for handling, dont get the ss springs, they raise the rear too much reducing handling- to improve the rear end suspention for handling purposes, i would put on a sway bar and fab up a panhard bar- there are many universal ones on summit

the biggest thing that can improve handling is tires- spend most of you budget on good rims and tires for good handling, its about 70% of your setup, i cant stress this enough

Only reason I went through the trouble of lowering mine on one side is because it was really noticeable, and it just bugged me.  I thought I could just live with it at first but everytime I saw my car from behind I got pissed off.  It was just an itch I had to scratch, so I scratched it.  Now its better  Grin

These are the 002 and 003 SS springs on my boys Dart.  Its a street car and we adjusted the torsion bars to get his car to sit within 1/2" on both sides.  The car drives nice and hooks good at the track.  Ron

An extra left spring on the right side?  I'm sure the Hemi and 440 cars had six full leaves on the left, and five full leaves on the right with two half leaves on the forward half on the spring.  I don't believe that this alone would make a car sit unlevel.  It does make me curious about if anyone has made custom springs for an A-body similar to the "Hemi" leaf springs with the two half leaves on the right side.

I might be wrong here, but I think 440-6 cars had the same # of leafs side to side with 1 extra 1/2 leaf on the rt side......When I build hp into a car I always add the extra 1/2 leaf to the rt side to help control axel wind up... good shocks are a must......Ofcourse all is for not without sticky rubber...........kim.......

ya i just checked ....so it's actually 6 full leaves on the driver side...7 on  the pass...but the last one can be refered to as half a leaf[book's also refer to it as one leaf].........which is at the very bottom  on top of shock mount.....this coming from a original car....so the pass side sit's just a tad higher...about 1/4 of a inch ..Wink
