I have a 73 Duster that I ripped out all the original wiring and the car is going to be a Pro Street car( pretty much a race car setup wiring with the other needed wiring to make it street legal, just a basic wiring needed to run car on street and have headlights, brake lights, tail lights and turn signals) now has anyone done this before and kept a wiring diagrahm of there wiring , I was looking at keeping the pushbutton starter switch instead of using a key to start car(I am going to mount a toggle switch under dash that must be turned on before car can be started, just looking for a simple wiring plan for my Duster and still be street legal .The motor will have a one wire GM alternator( has internal regulator built in already)

Ever heard of Painless? I can't remember the name of their website off the top of my head, but search painless wiring and you'll find it. I'd use one of their kits long before I made up a harness from scratch. They make a Mopar musclecar harness. You'll pull your hair out wiring a car from scratch. I used to wire boats and industrial generator sets and cars are a pain in the ass.

I wired Alan's Barracuda from scratch, sort of. I used the factory wiring diagram and only installed the circuits that we needed.

I ahve wired a couple of cars in the past, its cheaper to buy a painless harness. By the time you buy all the wires and parts you need, it will cost you twice as much, and they have done all the math.

thats what im doing now, i started off with my stock harness and striped it down to about 1/3 of what it was and ran new wires for most circuits, everything how i wanted-
i just used the factory wiring diagrams and added pink and yellow wires (uncommon in my car) to my new curcuits
i moved the fuse panel down under the console and am running all the switchs to my fingertips behind where the shifter will go-
only stock switches are the hazards and the turn signal, everything else is toggle with lights, wipers and all

painless here too, plus all the wires are marked what they are , not just color coded

I think all the kits now have colored and labeled wires, but it's a good thing to check. Painless and Hot Rod Wires are labeled, When I bought mine Hot Rod Wires was a little cheaper.

I've used a kit from Painless to do a Mustang from scratch. I also used one from EZ Wiring that was just like Painless, but WAY less expensive and had a few more circuits. When I do the Dart it'll be the EZ Wiring kit for sure. http://www.ezwiring.com/harness.htm

I did a Duster from scratch with a Painless kit. And everything actually worked when I was done! It was really slick, with everything color coded and wiring all labeled.

Unless you want your entrie car to have only 4 colors of wire, no labels, and hard to trace, get a kit. You will need many different colors of wire, time, and money to actually do it correctly from scratch. I have questions into EZwiring and Ron about their kits. Mike, I will check out Hot Rod too, thanks!

The EZ wiring kits are labeled, and almost a replica of the Painless kits for a fraction of the price.

The Painless fuse panel is a little bulky, but if you don't care about stock, they make a great kit. I wired my CJ-5 with a complete harness, and it didn't look factory, nor did it resemble excrement. I thought turds were lumpy and generally brown in appearance? Do buy a kit ( Painless, Ron Francis, EZ, etc. ), unless you're looking for concourse. If you want to build a show car, you can call Evans wiring for factory style circuits, but they won't be cheap.

Has anyone hearr, got a recipe for some scratch biscuits? If you're serious, I'll ask my wife when she gets back from the mall. She's from the south, so she makes all that stuff.

Patience is a virtue! It's probably a good couple of weekends, there always seems to be things needed from the parts store. It's really just a matter of getting a handle of the task and trudging through it....at least that's how it is for me.

I used Hotrodwires kit. Mount the fuse block and away you go. I recommend some electrical knowledge.

Right now I'm in the process of installing a push-button start ignition and converting my headlight switch to relay operated exterior lights. my question is where did you mount the relays?

Mount the relay in a dry location near the headlights. That way you keep the small diameter wire going to the lights short to keep the voltage drop down.

I've done two, one using a painless wiring 18 circuit universal harness. It went in well, but when I went to start the car it would start cranking in run and start, so when you let off the key from start it would still be trying to run the starter. The ignition switch was from Painless too, and wasn't the problem. Apparently they had crossed something in the fuse block, so I had to bypass the fuse block for the start/run from the ignition switch and put my own inline fuse in.
The other car I wired just used their 8 circuit switch box, and I wired everything through it.

EZ Wiring here too...Got it off Ebay for like $130 for an 18 circuit universal, the fuse block is smaller than a cigarette pack, all wires are labeled every 5-6"...I read somewhere that Painless buys they're supplies from the same place as EZ, Hotrod, etc...Ron Francis kits are nicer than Painless in my humble opinion but they cost about the same...
