I still think they should clean it. I gotta believe that what they are seeing is the cosmoline rust prevenative. Yeah the interior is shot, and the drive train is a disaster. But Who knows.

www.forwardlook.net was the site that the the original post I saw here on was from. Apparently, they had pretty good photo priveleges at the unveiling. Not for the faint of heart..... At least you can still see gold paint in some of the pics..........

That looks an awful lot like cosmoline to me... I had an SKS that I bought that was completely covered in about 1/4 inch of the stuff, barrel was all the way full too. Lets put it this way, its far from water solluable. I think there is hope for it yet. After all, my dads 57 Sport Fury convert was a lot worse when he brought it home!

Can Boyd ever get a motor to actually start without about 2 days of working on the brand new crate motor?

They should have steamed off all that cosmoline crap ...did you see how shiny that bumper was? ?? No perforations in the body ! Rust my A_ _ ! That thing is definitely a keeper !

I bet there was internal engine rust, it probably go in through the breathers, carb, etc. I would bet everything I own that it would not start without a complete rebuild.

I've come to a conclusion ...
They should put it back in the hole, fill it with water, cap it and erect a headstone for the poor thing ...
if it rusted enough to rust through the rear springs (photos on forward.net) ... those blisters by the headlight aren't cosmoline saddly

I agree, I think most of the "Grunge" is just cosmoline, and Boyd is gonna take it to his shop, clean it all up, and make him and Da Boyz look like Miracle workers at what an outstanding job they did in restoring her....Buncha BS if you ask me.....

I was within 5 feet of it, it is definately rusted, but if it had sat outside for the 50 years it would look worse.
Yes it would clean up. All soft material was gone and the case of shiltz beer too!
3 of the 4 tire held air, front fender and door showed signs of rust holes and whole body had surface rust. BUT the paint was still there. Most od what you see is dirt and crud from being under water for 40+ years (my guess it took a few years to fill up with water)
You could see water lines on the vault and on the car. They stated they pumped out about 2,000 gallons of water before getting down in the vault to remove the car.
One of Boyd's guys checked the dipstik and it was full of water, they couldn't get the doors open, took the vent widows out and rolled down the door glass.
The leaf spring was broken, some little kid was holding it up for the crowd to see.
The cover on the car was torn on the left rear fin (made in Shelbyville, IN)
Yes, this car could be saved with a complete restoration, but it should be left like this as how not to store a car. Now that it is out of the ground it will start to rust and quickly unless they do something to preserve it. It would have been nice to see it come out just as it went in, but it can out just as I expected.
In 1998 they buried a Prowler. We went to the site it is at and my guess it will come out in good condition. It is actually above ground in a vault with dirt put around it. It also looked like they have some kind of irrigation system in place. They are to bury another car this fall too, those people sure like to bury cars.

Looks Like Mr R E Humbertson won the car, he was born in 1921, his guess was around 2,000 off,if you know him or his heirs call [918]2937567 there looking for him lots of info at buriedcar.com click on VEIW GUESSES and ya see em all or the close ones anyway, then click on newsroom scroll down to the tulsa world stuff "the other Belvedere, I didn't know it but they gave away another 57 Plym 2 days prior, the couple that won it are still alive and theres an article on it, guess what, there ford f--ks and didn't want it, they traded it in with there present ford and got a new ford, I guess also the other Plym was a stripped down model, theres a picture of ol ford f--k and his kids standing by the striped down one and his 55 or 56 ford too. Tons of other good info there too. "buriedcar.com" Any body know if this Humbertson guy will have to pay taxes on a new loaded belvedere 57 value anyway ?

This time they welded up the steel box and pressurized it with Nitrogen.
