I'm thinking I might pick up a media blaster over at Harbour freight. I was wondering what the best material to use on an auto body causing the least damage on the metal. Aluminum oxide? I knew of somebody who used something that left his car looking like it was primered in white; but I can't remember what he told me he used.  It looked real nice after blasting |

I'd start with walnut shell to get the paint off and then progress to glass bead for the tougher stuff.

Look on eastwood.com , they have blasting media, and they tell what each one is good for.

you also need to becarefull not to warp the panels, this usually isnt a problem with the blasters a do it yourselfer will use but i have seen panels done by shops or people using more powerfull equiptment get real distorted by the heat caused from blasting

Soda is the most popular for car bodies, but I've used sand with good results using CHEAP equipment, which I think is the key. The sand just wasn't hitting that hard, plus the body was dented up underneath the bondo.

Soda blasting works REALLY well and it's REALLY easy on your sheetmetal!

You probably won't get the soda to run through your sand blaster.But you can get it at a feed store .At least that's where I got mine .They feed it (sodium bicarbonate) to cattle to help keep the gas down in their stomachs so they can eat more .The last time I bought it it was about $9 a bag 80-100lbs.

the harbor freight one is a piece of crap, kinda like the rest of the stuff their, plus having a cabinet is a HUGE plus, but sand through the HF one like jim said works quite well, but remember time and skill invested, its can still turn out good

I wouldn't blast glass bead outside a cabinet. That stuff is wicked and finds it's way everywhere. It's a great cleaning media, but if it gets where you don't want it, it will destroy stuff.
There's a company on Long Island that will come to you, set up a tent and blast your car. I think that's what I'll be doing when the time comes. That way, the car gets done fast, he cleans up the mess and I spend my time doing something other than blasting a car.

 one time when i blasted without a cabinet, i used a sweatshirt in 90* weather with the hood up and a face mask, that the sand ruined by the way- always use a cabinet for everything now

I think they are saying build one around your car using a tarp and some 2X3's. That way this stuff does not wind up in your house and the neighbor's yard, etc.. Good luck!!!

Well; I'm home free then!  I live in the sticks. I have at least 100 feet to my neighbors house. I've been checking out many websites on blasting a car body. There seems to be many opinions on what to use. But I think now I'll mostly be blasting the underside of the car; the frame, and the front wheel wells. I don't wanna take a chance on warping the body panels; and I'm replacing the quarters. Other than that; the body is in pretty good shape. |

dont forget a good resperator and goggles the dust is terrible and if you use sand i think they concider the dust a carcinogin

Yeah; I've heard of a product called Starblast that is supposedly silica free. But I will get a good respirator anyway. |

Unless you have 10 HP or bigger compressor you will be in for a looooooooooooong day ... sandblasting uses hugh amounts of air and the compressor will run the whole time you are doing it ... my advise would be to fnd som one local who does it for a living and jsut pay them the $$ to do it. the local guy here will do the whole inside, outside, engine comp and underside (excluding the roof) and put cheapo primer on it for $750.

i use sand on the jambs, underside, and engine compartment. works great, but i have heavy duty equipment........i never blast on the skins, i chemically strip those.

ANyone see Muscle Car this weekend on Spike? He use a high pressure washer that also fed sand in while spraying, eliminating dust, but also sandblasting at the same time.

I JUST LEARNED today about dry ice blasting, google it it sounds VERY interesting. no mess, safe, cool, etc. Locally there are fellas who roll out to your place and do it on the spot. to me it seems way cleaner as the media vaporizes all you have to clean up are the paint chips or whatever.
Dunno - i had never heard of it.

When I did my undercarriage I used a product made from copper slag that I got from a local building store. I found that sand blasting is a "Really Crappy Job" I wore Saftey Glasses plus a face sheild and resperator and coveralls with taped sleeves and collar and I still ended up at the Doctors to remove grit from my eye. Cheap sand blasters do nothing but make a "Mess and a "Crappy Job" Get the Pro's to do it right  One more thing Silica Sand is "Toxic" or so I was Told !!! |

What do you think they do after any chemical stripping? Water dilutes, therefore neutralizes acid.
