Wiring a std in a 68
« on: June 15, 2007, 02:09:07 AM »

So I went from an auto to a 4 speed. Do I just use the 1 wire switch out of the auto in the 4 speed or do I need to run some wires and use the 2 prong switch? If so, where do they go? Thanks

There is no nuetral safety switch with a manual. The switch on the four speed is the backup light switch. The brown wire that went to the trans needs to be grounded (The "G" terminal on the starter relay needs to go to ground). Some later cars had a clutch pedal switch for this purpose, but I don't recommend it due to excessive wear on the thrust bearing.

Thanks Jim,
Ground to the frame? I know the switch that was in my auto trans was a ground basically. I was thinking I could just screw it into the 4 speed and it would work the same.

Yeah, but there's really no place to put it and it's another wire to get in the way. We just ran a jumper to ground near the battery on Jeff's Dart. There is a special manual trans relay that has that terminal attached to the case of the relay.
