k member question
« on: July 03, 2007, 11:29:41 AM »

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,29608.0.html

I bought a 71 duster a few weeks ago. I am in the process of replacing the slant six with a 318. At the local drag strip I met a guy that converted his dart to a v8. He kept the slant six k member and used a mid seventies truck or van engine mount on the passengers side and a regular mount on the drivers side. It looked like a factory install. He sold me an extra mount set up that he used.
The question I have is should I use this set up or changed the k member to a V8 k member (I have a dart v8 parts car) or would it make a difference?

Also I notice that the torsion bars are the same on my slant six (none air) Duster and a v8 air Dart. Is this common or have the bars been changed on one of the cars?

leaving the "K" in is a heap easier than removing and replacing it. no alignment needed. if the bars are the same leave them.

Measure the torsion bars to be certain. The slant should have .830s while the 318 with air should have .870s.

Easy on the 7.25" rear.  Just dusted a 7.25 last week behind a 318.  Would you belive that the 89 dakota rear bolted right in but was a touch wider over all, but bolted right in on the leafs.  Ya not much better with the 8.25 but might last for a bit.  Funny thing is if you snap the passenger side axle the spiders just let the other side free wheel and the car will not go any where.

Use the mounts you were sold to do the swap and have fun.

I found a 8 3/4 rear (housing only) from a 71 Duster for $150.  Is this price about right?

I decided to swap out the K member in the my Duster. I'm concerned about headers clearance (future mod).
I removed the k member from the Dart without removing the upper control arms and left the steering box conected to the steering shaft. Hope to simplify changing the K member in the Duster.

$150 for the housing is a fair price.
