Topic: Is it easier just to change these damn left thread lugs? (Read 392 times)

Hey All,
With my new rims swap, I want to put some solid chrome plated lug nuts with on the car with a lock on each wheel. On the left side of the car they have the old left thread. Is it easier to replace the studs, than try to find left threaded lugs and locks?
If so, anyone know where I can order those studs?

The resto places prob have the LH chrome lug nuts and prob want an arm and a leg for them as well. Check YO and see what they have. BTW - the lug nuts I had were all RH and went with the last set of LBP rallyes I shipped out.
The studs themselves are easy enough to swap out on the rear (beat them out, then use a lugnut and washer to pull them back in). The front ones are swaged (sp) into the drum / hub and are a bear to get out. I replaced a set in a '65 and we just peened them at the base to hold them into the hub.
I am vague about the reasoning behind the LH / RH threads. I am sure one of the guru's will have the correct explaination on why they used the diff threads.

The front studs DO NOT WANT TO COME OUT. I filed the swaged over shoulder and pounded on mine for hours, only to bend one over. I ended up buying another right hand thread hub at a swap meet and changing it over. I now have two right hand hubs with new races, bearings and drums, if you can wait till I get off my a** and bolt up the disc brake kit sitting in my basement. ![\/][](http://www.bigblockdart.com/Smileys/classic/finger020.gif)

I hate those left handed studs. I'd just pull the hub and use a press to remove them, then promptly throw them in the nearest garbage can. Some engineer was either hungover or had a sick sense of humor when he came up that idea.

They had some crazy rationale behind them coming loose with the differing rotational direction on the left side. I think someone slipped a little something in their brownies.

Replace them with right hand. There's no problem with the disc brake rotors/hubs getting the studs out, but the front drums I've dealt with were swaged over and would have to be cut or ground down to be able to get them out.

i would replace them with the right hand, but imo, the lug locks are stupid- many people have the key for them, they are pretty universal- if someone really wants the rims, they will take them, my friend just got his complex, locking hubcaps stolen off his buick- usually they end up rusting on easier than regular lug nuts and then you will lose the key or break it

for front drums with pressed in studs, you need a hydraulic press. There is a special press tool just for studs. It supports the hub underneath, directly around the stud area. Then a ram (~ 2" dia.) gets pushed down on the end of the stud to drive it out. Once they are all out, then the drum can be seperated from the hub. If you don't use the special tool, you will bend the drum at the hub. If you switch one stud at a time, you won't even have to cut the drum. When reinstalling the studs, the same tool is used. The studs are pressed into the hub. Then (step 2 here)...the same tool is used, except the ram tool has a hole in the end, and it has the end ground down to a taper. The stud goes into the hole, and the taper part pushes on the stud shoulder, speading it out to lock the drum on the hub.
Best thing to do? go to a brake shop that can swap drums on your hub. They will have the press and the tooling. $6 for studs....a few $$ to press them in. Go all RH thread.

Do you really need locks? I have them and every time I have taken the wheel off I think why! .I never park it outside overight,never go to the movies and leave it out in the dark for hours, never leave it anywhere where someone would steal the wheel before the whole car.

Maybe I am just paranoid on the locking lugs. When I was a teenager I worked at a local tire shop for a year or so. Saw lots of stolen rims, tires/rims, etc.
The sucky thing is that I plan on doing a disk brake swap eventually, so I will be half way to my right hand threads already. But in the meantime I hate looking at those ugly open ended lug nuts!
So Year One would have the studs?

Your local Advance, Autozone, Schlep Boyz or NAPA should be able to get the studs easily enough. I do not know if they are 'correct' or not, but I got a set of chrome lugnuts at Pep Boys one time they looked good on the steelies I had on my '67. YO would have the 'correct' ones, I'm sure.

It was the 60's, but at that time, they were just smoking the stuff, not baking brownies.  I would get rid of the studs. The rear axles are easy, the fronts are going to be a bear.

You're all not using a big enough hammer!!!!!!!
